Japan is holding an election for half of the seats in its upper house, the House of Councillors, on July 20. The House of Councillors is less important than the lower house, the House of Representatives, but the results of this elec🤡tion could be a good barome﷽ter for how the next lower house election is going to go.

An aspect of the manifesto of the right-wing populist party Sanseitō has garnered attentioꦑn from fans of Japan's entertainment industry who are worried about the wording of one of the party's commitments in this area (thanks, ). Sanseitō calls the entertainment industry (games, manga, anime) a "core industry" that has become an important tool for Japan's "cultural diplomacy and international influence." As such, Sanseitō has plans for 'supporting' the industry.

Wholesome-ification

Some of these supports are beneficial, such as improving human resources and conditions for workers. However, the troubling part of﷽ their manifesto reads, "Delegating authority to the Agency for Cultural 🐲Affairs to ensure the wholesome development of manga, anime, and games as culture, rather than judging their value based on economic rationale."

The ambiguity of this plan is worrying to fans in the entertainment industry, who view it as a threat to artistic freedom.ꦚ

"I thought all this talk about Sanseitō's proposal to transfer authority over manga, games and anime to the state had to be some kind of misinterpretation," writes . "So I went to their site to check for myself. They really areꦓ saying that. What the hell do they think creators are?"

Sanseitō is a conservative party, ♔notable for being anti-vaccine and anti-LGBTQ+, so you can imagine the sort of philosophy the party would bring to making entertainment more "wholesome."

"The value of all entertainment, whether it be anime, games or music, can only be determined by the consumers," posts . "There is not 🔯a single creator who would hand over the authority over their creative works to the state."

Sanseitō is projected to increase its representation from a single seat to ♕approximately fifteen seats, based on ♉recent polling. The party initially garnered support from anti-vaccine voters, but Sanseitō is gaining popularity among anti-establishment youth.

Sanseitō is yet another example of a populist, reactionary political party gaining tractio🅷n, a common trend in politics worldwide.
