Infinity Nikki Was The Most Interesting Game At PlayStation's State Of Play Showcase

If you’ve been following the post- discourse as I am, you might have noticed people complaining about ﷽the that is serving up for its players. Yo⛄u might also have noticed that these complaints come with an important caveat: is the exception.

I’ve written extensively about being sick of open-world games, and I’ve never really been a dress-up sim fan, but the game immediately stood out from the rest because it was just so different. We&💮rsquo;ve seen some variation on ever🐓y game PlayStation presented before, but I’ve never seen a game quite like Infinity Nikki.

Wait, Infinity Who?

That’s not because Infinity Nikki is a completely new IP. The Nikki series has actually been around for over a decade and apparently is quite popular in Asia, thꦛough I live here and have never heard of it - likely because the genre doesn’t appeal. The series has so far been mobile-only with gacha elements, making Infinity🥀 Nikki the first of its games to incorporate open-world gameplay, and each outfit gives Nikki access to different abilities.

It’s also added elements like crafting: says that materials found through gathering can be used to make new outfits. Nikki’s companion, Momo, also 🌄comes with a camera with adjustable settings, turning the world into one big backdrop for her photoshoots. In the trailer, we even see some platforming and combat, and while it doesn’t look thrilling, it certainly looks different.

Infinity Nikki Is Special

Does the game look amazing? Not really. But it’s a huge departure from Sony’s other games in that it very c📖learly caters to girls – the whole thing is very twee, portraying a wholesome world with whimsical creatures and joy. Apart f𓄧rom a surprisingly dark twist at the end of the trailer, Infinity Nikki and the larger Nikki series are largely focused on cute fits and frolicking in Miraland’s meadows.

Another recently released game where you can dress a girl up in different outfits, , is very clearly geared to a different audience because of Eve’s intentionally sexed-up appearance. Eve is sexy, but Nikki is very obviously intended to be cute.

In a hobby that is so often hostile to women and dismissive of stereotypical ‘girly’ things, it’s very cool to see Sony platforming a game that is so unashamedly cutesy and indulgent in feminine aesthetics. When I watched the trailer, I was transported back to my days trawling the early internet, playing Barbie games and giving cartoon characters makeovers. It feels like a souped up GirlsGoGames title, which may not be for me at this stage🌊 of my life, but does still appeal to a lot of people.

Obviously, Infinity Nikki isn’t j🍸ust for girls, because video games are for anybody regardless of gender, race, and all that other good stuff. But in an industry where studios are afraid to take risks 𒁃and try new things, I’m glad that this game gets to exist, even though it’s different. Let’s just hope that it isn’t completely rife with microtransactions like the previous entries in the series.
