Stardew Valley's major strength is that it's about as indie as it's possible to get. It's made by an artist with dedication and a vision, with no executives or shareholders to dictate what they think the game should be. The best that larger competitors can hope to do is imitate it because of that. The only thing that could really topple Stardew would be a similarly-driven indie developer making a game that's more compelling, but in a different way than what made Stardew so successful.
