In the action-platformer roguelike Clawpunk, you play a warrior cat making their way through a hostile world – this is where the cl൲aw and the punk come from. The developer is called Kittens in Timespace, there are nine levels in each stage, and nine playable cats.⛎ Given that you can swap between cats at the start of each level, you effectively have nine lives. The lore of cats is central here, but these specific Rum Tum Tuggers have the energy of punks at a Sex Pistols show.
A Race To The Bottom
The most unique thing about this indie is that it's vertically oriented. Your run begins with your pick of the litter emerging from an outhouse at the top of the level, then working their way down to the bottom. It's a little bit 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Super Mario Bros. 2 and a little bit Ice Climbers. But the game it reminds me of the most is Downwell, my favorite roguelike of all time. In that game, you play as a little dude who is falling, ahem, down a well. You can slow your descent by shooting your gun💜 boots, though you'll need to bounce on an enemy's head or land o🌱n a platform to refill them. It's a game where you want to go as fast as possible, but going fast means being reckless.
Clawpunk builds that risk/reward incentive into its core loop with a GTA wanted level-style system that, maybe counterintuitively, goes up as you avoid chaos. The idea seems to be that, if you don't take out the surveillance tech you pass as you progress toward the end of the level, the Hellhounds get sent in after you. If you keep refusing to create chaos, more and more Hellhounds will come. Kittens in ཧTimespace creative director and Clawpunk game designer Jamie White says the team hasn't settled on꧟ what the five-star Wanted equivalent will be, "but it's gotta be the equivalent of the army coming after you, so you can bet your bottom dollar it's going to be something mad."
White cites Return of the Living Dead as a primary influence, with additional nods to 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Blade Runner, "the Arnie action movies of the 80s and the 90s," Spelunky, 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Hotline Miami, and 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Super Meat Boy.
Play Your Way
In my time with the game, I played through the Junkyard and Woodlands levels as three of the cat protagonists. Dash is speedy, and slips all over the level if you're not careful. Buck is a powerhouse and can demolish his way through with a huge hammer. Cand๊y is a bit of an all-rounder in speed and power, but with a whip that can penetrate through walls, allowing you to take your opponents out from safety.
Those were the only cats I had access to, but the choice to have nine cats led the team to some interesting design decisions. As White puts it, "we can't just create a further six carbon copies of the demo characters." So, one rides around on rollerblades. One, Larry, bounces around on a pogo stick. "I could imagine Twitch streamers just basically doing Larry challenges," White says, "where they have to g🍌o through without engaging with the level." I🎃t's a game that caters to you, however you want to play.
