Summary

  • Lack of new content in Helldivers 2 has made the game stagnant, with the story evolving slowly and gameplay remaining unchanged.
  • The absence of the Illuminate in the game has led to a broken story pacing and a lack of urgency in completing missions.
  • The introduction of the Illuminate could shake up gameplay and inject much-needed narrative pressure, making missions feel important again.

I haven’t logged in to in weeks. I’ve been following the news, nosing around the communities, and keeping up with the lore, but I just can’t bring myself to play anymore. Sure, part of this is that I’ve got other things going on – I’ve got games to review and preview, events to attend,𒆙 and a personal life to maintain – but I’m starting to feel like it’s just not fun anymore.

This feeling started to develop about three weeks ago. Though the story is changing and evolving consistently over time, things slowed down significantly while Arrowhead was managing the PSN debacle. There weren’t as many Major Orders being issued, the player base was seething with negativity, and it just didn’t feel veryꦺ appealing to jump in and kill stuff.

When I first started playing Helldivers 2, everything felt exciting and fresh, because every twist in the narrative came at just the right time. Speculation about some new mechanic would reach a fever pitch, then be confirmed, and ✨the player base would colle🍷ctively cheer. New enemies would be hinted at, then actually appear. The story moved along almost too quickly to keep up with, because things were always happening. I started my Helldivers 2 column precisely because I thought it would be helpful to keep track of the rapidly-evolving narrative.

But that’s not the case anymore. There’s always going to be speculation about the game’s incoming updates on platforms like Reddit or Discord, but lately, there hasn’t actually been much action. For example, we’ve been getting hints that The Illuminate are soon to reenter the fray 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:since March, but a⭕part from leaks, there’s been no indication that they’ll be added to the game any time soon.

In fact, nothing much has been ♔added to the game for a while. We’ve gotten Warbonds, patches, nerfs, and buffs, but in practice, apart from a few new mission types, the game doesn’t feel that much different to play. The story isn’t evolving in any significant way, and gameplay isn’t either. We fight the same enemies, they push back, it goes on and on. Every time I think, this will be when the Illuminate finally appears, and then they never do.

That’s the biggest reason I don’t want to play anymore: the pacing of the story has been completely broken. We’re given arbitrary missions to kill billions of enemies, and then absolutely nothing of significance൩ changes. Yeah, the point of the Galactic War is that it’s eternal, but I&rsqไuo;m going to at least need some plot beats before I can bring myself to care again. Helldivers 2 needs a big shake up, and the Illuminate will be it.

When my colleague James Troughton sent me 168澳🌼洲幸运5ꦛ开奖网:the latest leak of an Illuminate’s design, I felt a tingle of interest for the first time in weeks. They look sick, have totally different skills and weapons from either of the two species we already can fight, and they have highly advanced technology to boot. Them entering the fray could offer a different st෴yle of gameplay entirely, and that’s just what I need.

But perhaps more importantly, their reappearance in the story would add some much-needed narrative pressure. Helldivers 2 is best when every mission feels important, like you’re actually contributing to a war effort with 🐲tangible consequences. Right now, nothing feels all that important, since the pacing has been thrown off so severely.

But the Illuminate jumping in woul﷽d make things urgent again, because what could be more narratively significant than an advanced alien species deciding you’re too much of a problem to ignore and you have to be exterminated? Finally, we can do something more interesting and important than kill x number of enem♛ies.

I don’t know why the Illuminate has been teased for so long with no reveal. I have a theory that it’s because 🌼Arrowhead has been pushing out updates and ওWarbonds so often, potentially giving them less time to complete the content that would have been added with the Illuminate. Maybe they’ve faced unexpected challenges with the overarching campaign and had to delay the reveal accordingly, throwing off the pacinꦚg. Maybe they just started teasing it too early. Or maybe the Illuminate isn’t coming at all and the entire fanbase has been getting high off the fumes of conspiracy theories. Whatever it is, I don’t want to play Helldivers 2 anymore. At least, not till I can add weird aliens with tentacles to the list of things I can murder.

Helldivers 2 is the sequel to the third-person shooter from Arrowhead Game Studios. This time out, the Helldivers are deep in the Galactic War, and it's up to you to bring Managed Democracy to the masses.
