While it can sometimes be used to explain how a protagonist loses their leveling progress between games, it's almost become a joke in the Kingdom Hearts series.

Sora's an upbeat guy and recovers quickly, but he's had trouble remembering things for a while now. From having his memories blatantly replaced to forgetting everything he knows about the Keyblade to make room for new training, here's every time Sora has lost his memory throughout the franchise.

Kingdom Hearts: Chain Of Memories

That Is The Way In Castle Oblivion

The first time Sora loses his memory in Kingdom Hearts is the moment he steps foot into the infamous Castle Oblivion. The find is to lose, and to lose is to find – at least that's what a mysterious figure tells Sora when he arrives. In this case, it refers to Sora's memories.

Within Castle Oblivion, Naminé slowly and meticulously replaces Sora's memories of Kairi with false memories of herself. The entirety of Sora's climb through the castle revolves around him pursuing her under the guise that she needs to be saved.

By the🐠 end of the game, however, all is revealed and Sora has to make a choice: he can either keep the memories that Naminé gave him, or he can step into the pod and allow Naminé to piece his original memories back together while he sleeps🥃, resulting in another memory loss.

Sora opts for the latter, but make🐓s a note to thank Naminé when he wakes up.

Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days

Foiled By A Puppet

Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days takes place between the first and second game, overlapping with Chain of Memories. While Sora's memories are torn apart in Castle Oblivion, some of them are absorbed by Organization XIII's Xion.

She specifically absorbs his♔ memories of Kairi (the ones Naminé has been looking for).

While it can be argued that these memories were already gone, Sora still had an inkling of who Kairi was during his time ℱin Castle Oblivion and was able to recall her face. Xion harbored those memories, preventing Sora from waking up at all until those memories were retrieved.

Starting From Level One (Again)

In Kingdom Hearts 2, Sora finally awakens, though he's back at level one. All progress made during Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories is lost, and Sora must build his strength from the beginning again.

While he initially mourns the loss of his abilities, he's able to recover them throughout the game and eventually becomes even more powerful. This, unfortunately, doesn't last long.

It's worth noting that the data version of Sora also loses his memories in Kingdom Hearts, when Jiminy's Journal is restored. Data-Sora accepts this and is reset before the final act of the game.

While Data-Sora and Sora are two distinct people, it's curious that both of them forfeit their memories at different times.

Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance

Sora forge💙ts everything he knows and starts at level one again in Kingdom Hearts 3D. This is in part to explain why he no longer has the skills he once did in🌺 the previous games while also shedding light on his self-taught Keyblade tactics.

Yen Sid tells both him and Riku to forget everything they know, and it seems that Sora took that quite literally. Aside from needing to learn how to fight in the Realm of Sleep, Sora finds himself the target of Young Xehanort's scheme.

In this, Xehanort attempts to corrupt Sora and make him one of the 13 vessels of darkness, but the plan ultimately fails. However, despite Sora's rescue from the Realm of Sleep, the damage is done.

By the end of the game, Sora is stripped of his powers once more – forgetting all the skills and abilities he learned ♔during his Mark of Mastery exam.
