Visions Of Mana Is The Pe♛rfect JRPG For Veterans And Newco🐭mers
I've been playing adventure RPG games since childhood, and VIsions of Mana was fresh enough to draw me in ෴but classic enough to feel intuitive.
Of course, with such a long absence since the last mainline game back in 2006, you might have lost track of just how many Mana games there even are. There are probably more than you might have expected, so let's dive in and show you each and every one of them.
For the sake of this article, we're using Japanese release dates for when these games were first launched.
How Many Mainline Mana Games Are There?
Original Games
The Mana games began back in 1991 as handheld titles. Originally intended as a spin-off of the Final Fantasy series, it developed an identity of its own over time, before eventually pausing its console efforts for almost 20 years. Here's each of the games, when they launched, and what platforms they were on.

Final Fantasy Adventure was known as Mystic Quest in Europe, and Seiken Densetsu: Final Fantasy Gaiden in Japan.
In the grand scheme of things, there's actually not that many Mana games. As you'll see below, there are many more spin-offs than mainline games, and almost as many remakes as well. With Visions of Mana though and the recent remakes, it does seem ꧙as though Square Enix has faiꦜth in the Mana series to flourish in the future.
That gives us a total of five mainline games, with hopes it will only grow in future.
Remakes Of Mainline Games
We tend to treat video game remakes as a relatively recent phenomenon, but they've been ever-present in the games industry since its inception. Of course, remakes took much less time back then and didn't require multi-year efforts to create an at-times inferior product. For the Mana series, understandably, remakes became a second chance to gain an audience and fix its more staggered international releases.

The Mana games first became 3D with Dawn of Mana in 2006, and every entry since has maintained this. That's why there are two remakes of the original Mana game - one is a pixel art version, and the later in the 3D stylings of later games.
There are currently four remakes of Mana gamesﷺ, ﷺwith the majority being 3D remakes. Since Dawn of Mana is already 3D, it may not receive the Remake treatment for a while still.
Also interesting - Trials of Mana was first released in the West in the Collection of Mana compilation game.
How Many Spin-Off Mana Games Are There?
Console Spin-Offs
The Mana series of course has its fair share of spin-offs, as does any Square Enix property, though it is strikingly less than you might think. Even more interesting is that the majority are either for mobile or handheld consoles, harkening back to the o﷽rigins of the series as a whole.

What defines the Mana spin-offs is their dramatic deviation from what defined the series as it had become at this point. Legend of Mana featured various forms of gameplay across different characters, Chil💞dren of Mana was a dungeon crawler, while Heroes of Mana is a multiplayer real-time strategy game.
There is another game developed by the western division of Square Enix, Secrets of Evermore, that was built as a pseudo-rꦜelated game to the Mana s🔴eries, but is not officially acknowledged as a part of the franchise.
Mobile Spin-Offs
The remainder, and vast majority, of the Mana spin-offs were exclusive to mobile and the problems therein of that market. Unfortunately, none of the Mana games on mobile lasted exceedingly long, but that didn't stop Square Enix from continuing to make more and more of them.

While Friends of Mana was released as part of the World of Mana initiative and lasted a total of five years, the subsequent games were riddled with ⭕microtransactions and received less than favourable reviews. As of now, there is not currently any Mana mobile game that is still running.
That gives us a total of seven spin-off Mana games, split three across consoles and four on mobile, with six of them being portable entries.
As you probably noticed, each mobile Mana game was shut down even faster than the previous.
How Many Games Are There In Total?
While the series is comparatively light on entries in comparison to some of Square Enix's more prolific series, it still has a respectable number to its name. Let's break them down.
- Mainline Titles - Five games.
- Spin-Offs - Seven games
- Remakes - Four games, including two separate remakes of Final Fantasy Adventure.
In 2006, Square Enix launched a plan to revitalise the Mana series - World Of Mana. This involved the release of four games between 2006-2007, Children of Mana, Friends of Mana, Dawn 🐟of Mana, and Heroes of Mana.
In total that gives us a grand total of 16 games, or 17 if you want to be cheeky and count Secret of Evermore. Here's hoping Square Enix values the series more going forward and invests in games other than mobile entries they subsequently close a year later.
