Dune was published in 1965, and quickly attained cult status among science fiction readers. The film rights were first optioned in 1971 by Arthuer P. Jacobs, the producer of The Planet Of The Apes. After Jacobs' death in 1973, French producer Michel Seydoux acquired the rights.

Directed by Alejandro Jodorowsky of Chile, this version of Dune would have featured music from Pink Floyd, character designs by HR Giger, and the likes of Salvador Dali, Mick Jagger, and Orson Welles in the cast. The ambitious film quickly devoured its budget before even making it to production, a🍰nd was dead in the water by 1978.

When Seydoux's film rights expired in 1982, they were snapped up by Italian producer Dino De Laurentiis, who would go on to have a hand in the Evil Dead series. David Lynch agreed to direct, turning down Return Of The Jedi to do so.

In addition to being the definitive film version of the novel for decades, the 1984 version of Dune is perhaps most famous for casting Sting, the frontman of The Police, as the villainous Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen. However, Star Trek fans get to see a pre-Picard Patrick Stewart in the role of Gurney Halleck, Paul's swordmaster.

While not a big-budget feature film like the other adaptations, its technical achievements earned it three Emmy nominations, winning two.
