  • Malevelon Creek represents a futile battleground, akin to real historical battles like the Battle of Stalingrad.
  • The game highlights the cycle of oppression and violence, forcing players to perpetuate a never-ending conflict for temporary gains.

is a game about war. To be more precise, it’s a game about how pointless war is. This political stance is often missed by people who see a game and think ‘killing stuff is fun’, but it’s pretty clearly articulated in both its influences and its gameplay. I’ve already gone into detail on how 168澳洲幸运5开奖网𓆉:its roots frame the game in anti-fascism, but in the months since Iꦜ started playing, a combination of emergent storytelling and clever narrative shaping on Arrowhead’s part has made this all the more clear.

I’ve been thinking a lot about Malevelon Creek lately, and how Creekers (players who never leave that planet) are unwittingly replicating what war is l𓂃ike in real life. For months, a group of players have been holding Malevelon Creek up as a symbol. Nicknamed ‘Robot Vietnam’, Malevelon Creek is brutal and unforgiving. Automaton-controlled planets are already difficult in comparison to Terminid-controlled ones, but Malevelon Creek has dense jungles that provide cover💛 to swarms of Automatons, adding a whole other layer of difficulty.

Malevelon Creek fell on 28 February, along with the rest of its sector. Players have been trying to liberate it ever since, at the expense of failing Major O♔rders and trailing Liberation progress bars on other planets. Elsewhere, planets♒ are lost. Players die in fruitless attempts to defend their strongholds and push back opposing forces. Creekers don’t care. Creekers care about avenging the millions of soldiers that have died on Malevelon Creek. Creekers want vengeance, glory, redemption.

Real-life war is often just as symbolic. Military propaganda – specifically in the West – tells the people that military intervention into other regions’ conflicts is necessary because the West is the bastion of democracy. Democratic governments must crush Communism, throw endless bodies into regions where they aren’t wanted, kill civilians, and be locked in stalemates for years because of what those wars represent. Countless lives lost, often in wars started by those governments themselves for their own purposes and benef🀅it. Sound familiar?

As many other people have noted, Malevelon Creek parallels the real-life story of the Battle of Stalingrad in many ways. Stalingrad had huge symbolic value to the Soviet Union, since it was, you know, named after Stalin. For the Nazis, capturing it would have been a huge ideological win, and would also have made it much harder for the Soviets to get supplies. Adolf Hitler intended to execute all the male citizens and deport the women and children. Hitler severely underestimated the Soviets’ capabilities. They were locked in a stalemate for almost a year in the largest, costliest urban battle in the entire history of warfare.

In real life, the Nazis surrendered. But in Helldivers 2, Super Earth won – or rather, we have control of the planet for as long as 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Game Master Joel wants us to. The thing is that it’s all temporary. The Automatons mꦅay have lost this time, but there are thousands of battles going on every day. The game relies on an eternal stalemate, necessitating that we throw millions of bod🔯ies into combat to die so we can subjugate alien species for our own gain.

What’s so different about the real world? Nothing, really. The oppressor, the invading force, often enacts violence for symbolism, for land, for glory, for ideology, for revenge. Here, we are the🏅 oppressor. We are the invading force. We fight, we die, we avenge our fallen patriots, all so we can wake up the next day and do it again.
