How Squads Work
Squads in Hell Let Loose are a collection of soldiers in a small group that are directed by an Officer known as a Squad Leader. These groups can be made public or private and the maximum capacity of each crew is six.
Squads have their own private radio channels and pings on targets only appear to other members of that group. Each Squad member takes on a certain role from the roster and the leader of the group can place down a Spawner just for the Squad. A great leader is one that can coral this group of heavily armed strangers into a cohesive fighting force that can c🀅apture points or defend vital areas for the team.
The Squad Leader Role
To play🍸 as the leader of a group all you need to do is to create an infantry unit or select the Officer Class. As a Squad Leader you have access to a bunch of great information-gathering tools that will keep your crew and the Command Chain up to date on the battlefield.
For starters there's the Outpost, which will let your crew spawn closer to the enemy than the rest of the team. Perfect for creating new angles of attack separate from the frontline push. They've also got smoke grenades to provide cover and binoculars like the Spotter, which can be used to mark enemy armor, infantry, garrisons, and other points of interest to the entire team. Squad Leaders are also the first point of contact for the rest of the Command Chain. So you'll be able to communicate with the Commander and other Squad Leaders to organize assaults and provide updates on the battle. It's a lot of plates to keep spinning, but it's not too hard to do.
Squad Management Tips
For first-timers looking to test their management skills, or Veterans that want to take a crew of their own under their wings there's a lot to learn about being a Squad Leader.
Juggling different radio channels and several people all itching for combat can feel like a lot of pressure. Especially if people start yelling at you, which they will do regardless of whether you're a good or bad Squad Leader. But to make the transition into the Officer role a little easier, here are some handy tips for playing 𝓀as a Squad Leader.
Break The Ice
Not everyone is confident or willing to talk on a mic. Most players🃏 in Hell Let Loose can be pretty talkative once you get them going, but breaking tꦺhe ice with some pleasantries can always help.
Chatting to your squad also lets them gauge you as a leader. Don't worry if anyone leaves when you introduce yourself, the space always gets filled by someone else eventually. A good start is just a hello, and a basic game plan. Also, say if you're new as veteran Hell Let Loose players can often provide tips and help for first-time Squad Leads.
Check In With Everyone
You don't need to keep constant tabs on your team at all times as most players are proficient enough to know what they're doing. But the occasional check-in can be helpful.
Ask where everyone is when you're attacking, or positioning the right Squad member where they're going to be the most useful. If you're defending, check if anyone has an angle on the next enemy wave and generally try to keep up morale. Hell Let Loose can be quite draining, especially if you're losing, so keep tabs on your crew.
Have A Plan
They say no great plan survives the first few seconds of an encounter with the enemy but having a general gist of what to do when the bullets start flying can help. Think about how to react should an ambush suddenly open up on your crew. Where people should start being p🐽ositioned or paired off to maximize their potential.
Whether that's getting the squad together on a truck, regrouping somewhere, or attacking the point. Have plan. If you don't keep your crew focused they'll just wander off and start doing their own thing. The second everyone splits up, the group's usefulness as a fighting force will start to diminish. Keep the team on the move and think about how each field, street, and br💝idge is going to be crossed as an ambush is always seconds away.
Keep Everyone Close
Your Squad is best used when they're kept close, especially when you're in enemy territory. Having your crew close means everyone can help each other at a moment's notice. Plus it makes keeping track of your teammates easier as you don't need to constantly open the map.
At most, 50 yards or 100 at the absolute limit should be the maximum distance your Squad should be apart. That's within good sprinting distance for Medics to treat the injured and minimum range for marksmen in the crew to pick off any threats.🌸 Call people backꦅ if they start to wander off and keep them close.
Don't Be Afraid To Kick People
As a Squad Leader, you have the ultimate power to kick people from your squad, and you should never be afraid to drop that hammer. The core of Hell Let Loose is teamwork, and if someone isn't pulling their weight make sure to boot them.
It's also worth using as a solution to people Trolling, or if someone is just yelling at you. After all, one negative person could affect the morale of the rest. That doesn't mean you should squash all dissent, instead use it when appropriate. Or if a more skilled teammate from a previous match is trying to join and you don't have space.
Remember To Drop Outposts
As a Squad Leader, your strongest asset is your ability to drop Outposts. These portable points are quicker to construct than Garrisons. Plus they don't require Supplies and can be dumped down pretty much anywhere.
There is a brief cooldown in between how often you plant an Outpost, but it's a really good way to sneak your guys into contested positions with a well-placed spawn point. They also have a quicker timer for spawns than Garrisons, so they get your squad back in the fight fast. Always make sure you have one down close to the enemy or at least every few hundred yards so you don't lose your progress across an area.
Use Commendations As An Incentive
It can be a little tri⛄cky to incentivize a group of strangers to work together for an hour or so. But offering a Commendation for being the best in the squad can often work quite well as the carrot on the end of the proverbial stiﷺck.
For those not familiar, Commendations are a small bonus bump in experience that's given out by squad members to each other. It's a way of rewarding good teamwork. Plus, guaranteeing some bonus XP encourages fr🅘iendlꦫy competitiveness and helps break the ice with team members.
Good manners in Hell Let Loose is to give your Squad Leader a Commendation. Especially on hard matches as it's a tough job and they're often doing their best.
