Each hero has its own unique hero ability which shapes how you play the game. We'll regularly update this list to follow the new hero meta, as well as to adjust to the frequent balance changes expected with the upcoming release of the United in Stormwind expansion for the base set of Hearthstone.

Updated July 19th 2021: We've overhauled this tier list completely, as it was very out of date. The meta in Hearthstone Battlegrounds changes frequently, especially with the recent hero power changes and introduction of the brand new minion type, Quilboars. We will continue to tweak this tier list with the best heroes on each patch.

S-Tier Heroes

hearthstone battlegrounds omu and hooktusk

The best of the best. You should pick these whenever you see them if you're looking to grind up the MMR ranks.

Forest Warden Omu

Power-leveling is a strong strategy in the game's current meta. With the introduction of Quilboars, hitting tavern tier five and six minions first is more important than ever. Forest Warden Omu typically gets there before most other heroes.

Two gold immediately after leveling up a tavern tier is very strong. It allows you to level on most turns, and still have enough money to balance the strength of your board. Aggression is key with Omu, and if you're super lucky, you can high-roll into a game-winning build within eight or nine turns.

Mutanus the Devourer

Mut꧃anus the Devourer is very strong. A zero-cost hero power is usually pretty good, but this is even better. You chew up one minion, put its stats onto another, and still get one gold back. This is strong because you can carry your early game stats into the mid-game, and then transition into the late-game.

The whole idea of Hearthstone Battlegrounds is to reach an end-game state with the best stats in the game, plenty of divine shields (yes, you can use Mutanus the Devourer's hero power to put all your stats into a Deflecto, for example) and scaling. Mutanus is comfortably one of the best heroes in Battlegrounds right now.

C'thun

C'thun is a hero that specializes in carrying weaker minions right through the entire game, from tavern tier one to the very end. At the end of each turn, you can give raw stats to a minion of your choice. This is a simple hero power, but very strong, especially if you find minions that can a) be given Divine Shield, like a Mech, and b) can be scaled with other minions, like a Lightfang or a Quilboar.

C'thun is a very consistent fourth, third and second place hero, but can struggle in hitting those steady high-rolls that can lead to consistent first places, like Forest Warden Omu. Generally strong, and very reliable, C'thun is a recommended choice.

Captain Hooktusk

Changed and tweaked what feels like a dozen times, Hooktusk is currently in a very strong position. Another zero-co🍒st hero ability, you can remove a friendly minion and pick up on🅰e of two from a tavern tier lower.

This sort of flexibility with your minion choice is strong throughout the game. In the early game, you can use it to pick 💝up potential triples, and later on, you can use it to hunt for more powerful four or five drops, while also maintaining a strong board in the process. Hooktusk has a great first-place win rate. Definitely worth 🤪picking up.

A-Tier Heroes

hearthstone battlegrounds jandice and rafaam

These heroes consistently hold their own, comfortable with hitting a third or fourth-place finౠish, o🐬r scratching out a win if you land the right minions.

Arch-Villain Rafaam

Rafaam has been a solid hero pick for a while now. Stealing one of your opponent's minions is vital in the early game, as it allows you to begin a snowball build and get ahead with how you use your gold economically.

At high MMR, skilled players will likely play aroun♓d your hero ability by moving cheap minions to the front, though the strength of getting a minion for a single gold coin is still valuable💮. Rafaam is a solid choice.

Jandice Barov

A Jandice game basically goes one of two ways: you either hit exactly the minions you need, like an Alley Cat and later an Amalgadon, or you miss completely and finish in seventh place. There isn't really a middle ground.

That being said, even with the massive differential between whether you're going to steamroll the lobby or not, Jandice is still a very strong hero to pick up. Swapping your minions out allows you to stack multiple battlecries, allowing you to farm minions that dupe themselves (like the Alley Cat we mentioned above) or get larger and larger, like the Annihilan Battlemaster.

Death Speaker Blackthorn

Although getting two Blood Gems after leveling up a tavern tier is not as strong as Omu's two gold coins, Blackthorn is still a strong hero, mostly because of the success of the brand new Quilboar minion tribe.

These pigs are running rampant over Battlegrounds at the moment, and at least the most recent patch has removed the guaranteed boars from every game. Regardless of whether you're seeing Quilboars more or less, Blackthorn is still one of the more reliable heroes to take for a full Quilboar build, thanks to that yummy Blood Gem synergy.

Reno Jackson

Reno is a high-roll wizard. You either get first place or come eighth by trying. The main strategy here is to level hard and fast on the hunt for a minion worth turning into a gold version. You're on the hunt for strong minions that help you scale into the endgame: Brann, Lightfang, or any of the new Quilboars.

Reno is a great hero, but the balance between first and eighth place is a tight one. Let's just say that throwing caution to the wind is probably the best and most enjoyable way to play this hero.
