Outside of Erebus, Hecate resides in the Crossroads, an area that seemingly fits between the world of mortals and that of the Underworld, hidden away but found only by those with permission. Why Did Hecate Rescue Melinoe?

In the original Hades, Hecate is not mentioned, let alone seen. Noting her dwelling within the far reaches of society, this makes sense. Hades himself had become quite the recluse as well, keeping the company primarily of the fellow Chthonic gods such as Nyx. So why did Hecate come to the rescue of Melinoë?

At present, we don't have a definitive answer. Hades 2 is currently in Early Access after all. ▨With a little bit of digging into actual Greek myth, however, we can find some highly likely scenarios for why Hecate would 🧔have been present on that fateful day when the House of Hades was ruined by the Titan Chronos.

For one, in early the renditions of Hecate, she was seen as a Chthonic god, like Hades himself. Being so closely associated with ghosts and crossroads, she in time became seen as the keeper of the keys to the Underworld, letting those souls pass through the realm between the realms of death. She too had a close affinity with dogs, and so she could be seꩲen as a dual protector to the gates of the Underworl𒀰d alongside Cerberus.

More interesting, however, is Hecate's associations with Persephone in myth. While at timesꦗ they have been conflated as being epithets of each other, this has also led many to read them as being closely linked when viewed as distinct individuals. Indeed, many tales exist of Hecate being the one to guide Persephone on her journeys from the Underworld to Olympus. Put simply, it is likely the pair were friends.
