168澳洲幸运5开奖网:The Golden Girls Take Manhattan DX, releasing later this year, is an RPG that takes Dorothy, Rose, Blanche, and Sofia, transplants them from Miami to the Big Apple, and has them engage in turn-based combat in between accomplishing everyday tasks. The game is inspired by Persona, but it's inspiring me to think about all the other sitcoms that would also work well as role-playing games.

Sitcoms and RPGs may seem incompatible. RPGs are built on character progression, while sitcoms need to maintain the status quo for years at a time. But, consider that sitcoms are also built around quests. Those quests can take the course of one episode, like Deangelo Vickers' quest to overcome his fear of public speaking and help Michael Scott host the Dundies. Or they can take much longer, as in the case of Ted Mosby's quest to tell his children the story of how he met their mother. In the long term or in the short term, sitcom characters have goals that they want to achieve. And whereas in RPGs there are typically monsters standing in our heroes' way, in sitcoms, the obstacles are designed to elicit laughs.

4 My Name Is Earl ♒

Jason Lee in My Name Is Earl

This sitcom starring Jason Lee which ran from 2005 to 2009 already has the structure of an RPG. As Earl explains at the beginning of most episodes in the first season, he was "the kind of guy who does nothing but bad things and then wonders why his life sucks." To turn his life around, he decides to make a list of every bad thing he's ever done, and work through it one by one, making up for each naughty deed. It's a good set-up for a sitcom, with each misdeed providing the framework for an episode, but it's also a great premise for an RPG's structure. Earl is on a quest that can be broken down into smaller, shorter quests and, sometimes, he could do sidequests that have nothing to do with his long-term goal.

3 Veep

Julia Louis-Dreyfus in Veep

The RPG market is severely lacking in political satires. Fallout 3 may have taken place in Washington D.C., but that was D.C. after the bombs fell, not the equally dangerous D.C. beset by backstabbing. I want to play a game that lets me take on the role of Selina Meyer and her party of political strivers. Selina was never the most gifted politician so this VPRPG would incorporate the Flaws mechanic from 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:The Outer Worlds, in which you have to choose something that your politician is bad at. It could also borrow from 2019's other great RPG, 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Disco Elysium, and grant you freedom to determine your character's political alignment.

2 Seinfeld

George and Jerry at the Frogger machine in Seinfeld

Seinfeld may be the show about nothing but it nevertheless has some great quests. George's quest to maintain his lie that he's a marine biologist in the face of a beached whale on a New York beach. Kramer's quest to make a career for himself as an actor in Hollywood. Jerry's quest to teach his girlfriend that there's a difference between good naked and bad naked. Elaine's quest to get rid of the incessantly barking dog outside her apartment. The Seinfeld RPG could borrow from 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Earthbound, setting its action in a world that isn't too different from our own, and from Disco Elysium, minimizing combat in favor of conversation. The best sitcom of all time could also be the best sitcom-turned-RPG of all time (though, the pickings are unfortunately still slim).

1 Community

Community Game Cropped

Though it's fun to see the Golden Girls get the Persona treatment, there are a ton of sitcoms that would be a better match for that RPG series' schedule management. Much of the action in Boy Meets World, Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide, Sister Sister, and Derry Girls takes place in schools. But, Community might have the best match for an RPG (and has already been RPG-ified thanks to the season two episode "Advanced Dungeons & Dragons" and its sequel, "Advanced Advanced Dungeons & Dragons"). If you played as Jeff, Brita and Annie could be romance options. There are tons of fun side characters. And, maybe most importantly, there's an opportunity for a paintball mini game.
