This guide will help you navigate the crane puzzles, traverse the poisonous mist-flooded sections of the woods, fight the Einherjar, claim all the hidden treasures, and put a dimension-hopping, colossal creature in its place. We've got a lot to cover!

The Abandoned Village

God Of War Ragnarok, Vanaheim, Entrance Into The Area With Einherjar

After having just put yourself through the harrowing experience of cleaning out another Draugr Hole, you will be moving on from this section of The Abandoned Village. Look for the giant, ornate wall. There is a hole big enough to climb through in the bottom left corner. This is where you need to go!

God Of War Ragnarok, Vanaheim, Slamming Down On Einherjar From Above

This leads to a giant arena filled with Einherjar. The thing you need to know about this arena is that it is a loop. So, your best bet is to engage units, take one or two out, then reposition yourself along the loop to help maintain an advantageous position. Throw in a few slam attacks when jumping down, and engage in a little ledge guarding when you are above enemies. You will clear them out in no time.

Keep in mind that climbing up a surface is more dangerous than swinging across. Which leaves you more vulnerable.

God Of War Ragnarok, Vanaheim, Burning The Brambles Blocking The Chest

Once you clear out the Einherjar, there will be nothing left in the arena to collect. Raise the gate, then take a right. Burn the brambles and climb up to grab the chest.

God Of War Ragnarok, Vanaheim, Freezing Poison Plant

Now, hop down and head straight until you hit a wall of poison. On the right, there is a flower you need to hit with your axe in order to stop the flow of poison. Once you freeze it, empty the nearby chest. Now, look up and burn the brambles above (wh𝓀ile also hitting the nearby bulbous poison plants with your axe), and then climb up 🍰the chain and head into the next area.

God Of War Ragnarok, Vanaheim, Freezing Another Poison Plant To Get The Chest

Once you get to the top, you will see an area to your right flooded with poisonous gas. Freeze the flower on the right and hop down to claim the legendary chest. N♍ow, head back to the main rouꦯte. Pull the chain, yanking the rope taut, then slide down the rope.

God Of War Ragnarok, Vanaheim, Linear Climbing Section

You will now engage in some climbing, swing between a number of grappling points, and eventually climb up to a gazebo-like structure. During this section, there are no goodies or hidden valuables. However, once you reach the ruins, take a left. This will take you to a chest.

God Of War Ragnarok, Vanaheim, Looking At The Giant Crane

Now, you will arrive at a giant crane. This puzzle can be a touch tricky, but we'll take you through it step-by-step. First, go to the left ledge and burn the brambles across the way, this will release the bucket. Now, hit the target on the right side, swiveling the crane around. Standing at the left ledge still, grab the bucket with your Blades of Chaos and yank it toward yourself (lighting a brazier underneath you that will come into♛ play a little later).

God Of War Ragnarok, Vanaheim, Grappling Across To The Other Side

You will now swing across to the island on your left using the grapple point on the back end of the crane. Now, while you are on the island, turn the crane (by hitting the targets on top with your axe) so that the bucket is between you and the brambles on the other side. Now all you have to do is grab the bucket with your blades, pull it toward yourself, and let it go. It will swing right into the brambles, lighting them on fire. Hop back up to the ledge, turn the crane so that the grapple point is between you and the dock across the way, and grapple across. But we aren't done with the crane quite yet. Take a right once you cross the bridge, and you will be facing a Nornir Chest.

God Of War Ragnarok, Vanaheim, Nornir Chest Near Crane

The first rune for the Nornir chest is to your left. Just ignite the brazier with your Blades of Chaos. The second rune you already got when you yanked the bucket towards yourself earlier (f you didn't do that, hop back across, and pull the bucket towards yourself while you stand on the ledge on the left). The third rune is wedged in the tree to the right of the bridge you cleared the brambles from. Just move the crane so that the bucket is dangling in front of the tree, then yank it toward the tree to ignite the brazier. That will do it; 😼go grab your Idunn Apple from the chest!

Now, head down the main path. There isn't anything in the way of treasure, so just crawl through the crack in the wall and prepare to face off against a boss.

Boss Fight: Fiske

God Of War Ragnarok, Vanaheim, Fiske Standing Proud And Tall

We're going to level with you. Once you know what you are looking for, Fiske is a pretty manageable boss. For starters, he is just filled with parry-bait attacks. His slow, rhythmic horizontal slashes are parryable, and they give you plenty of time to prepare. So, look to parry those.

When Fiske is performing his three-slash combo, Fiske will do a little stutter step b🐭efore the third slash. So, be mindful of that.

God Of War Ragnarok, Vanaheim, Unblockable Vertical Attack

Fisk will sometimes end his combos with an unblockable horizontal swing. Here is the thing you need to know about this move, if you step to the side you will be fine, if you roll away you will be tagged. The only time you will want to roll away is when he is performing his unblockable Bifrost explosion attack. Thankfully, this is extremely slow, and you are given a ton of time to react. If you see Fiske raising his sword and preparing to plunge it into the ground, it is time to roll away. Otherwise, every unblockable attack is better handled with a side roll.

God Of War Ragnarok, Vanaheim, Fiske Stabbing Attacks

The most dangerous Fiske ever gets is when he uses his stabbing spear attacks. These come pretty fast. You can block them, but you will take Bifrost damage. Ideally, you would parry these attacks. The only other attack in Fiske's arsenal is a big swing attack that has those beautiful blue rings around it. So, shield bash him and deal a ton of stun damage.

Keep in mind that a healthstone🧔 will remove the Bifrost ailment.♏ So, pop one of those to cleanse the Bifrost effect.

God Of War Ragnarok, Vanaheim, Parryng Fiske's Attacks

So, let's put this all together into a coherent strategy for you. When Fiske slowly walks towards you, toss your axe at him. Then, when he starts swinging at you, time the attacks and parry them. Each parry will give you an opportunity to land a combo. Meanwhile, you are looking out for that telltale red ring; when you see it, you will roll to the side. Unless that is, he is raising his sword and looking to plunge it into the ground, at which point you will roll away. When he takes his stabbing stance (where he raises his spear above his head and points the tip at you)꧃ prepare to parry the jabbing strikes as best as you can. We are confident you will take Fiske down in short order.

Since Fiske is going to get parried A LOT, it isn't a bad idea to leave your axe stuck in him and pummel him with your fists. He is going to rack up stun damage quickly and this will assure that you get multiple execution attacks on him.

Back To The Abandoned Village

After you leave Fiske's boss arena, take a left and enter the hut. There is a red chest here. In the next section, you are going to see a Legendary Chest across the way, and all you need to do is pull the crane over so that you can grapple across. Unfortunately, a column is blocking it. Don't worry, we can fix that. Jump down and enter the nearby structure with a treasure chest.

God Of War Ragnarok, Vanaheim, Pulling The Column Down

While in that building, look for a giant crack in the wall. From here you will be able to pull the column down with your Blades of Chaos. Then hop back up, grapple across the gap, and open the Legendary Chest. Now, climb up the stone wall, and shimmy over into the next area. Here there are some boxes to break if you like, but there is nothing really import๊ant to collect. When you are ready, open up the giant, metal doors. You will see a knot of roots. Prepare yo🦩urself for battle; Fiske was just an appetizer!

Boss Battle: Nidhogg

God Of War Ragnarok, Vanaheim, Nidhogg Reveals Himself

In his first form, Nidhogg has three attacks: An unblockable fireball, a claw slam, and a bite attack. You get a ton of notice with all those attacks. The fireball is what Nidhogg goes to the majority of the time. All you need to do is roll to the side. In between attacks, just keep tossing your axe at Nidhogg's head. If you see a yellow indicator for his slam or bite attacks, parry it, and you will be rewarded. Eventually, you will take a bar of healthꦦ and yank him out of the por෴tal.

Nidhogg's Second Phase

God Of War Ragnarok, Vanaheim, Nidhogg Second Form Tail Plunge

In this phase, Nidhogg has a lot of the same attacks, but they definitely come out much faster. He will also string them together now. Nidhogg will occasionally swipe at you with his claw in his second form as well. His big new move is his tail plunge. He will stick it into the ground, and after a period of time, it will erupt. However, this is a blue indicator attack, so you can shield bash it, and stagger him. You will want to get up close and personal with this phase. Beyond that, it is more of the same, really. You likely won't struggle too much against him here.

Nidhogg's Third Phase

God Of War Ragnarok, Vanaheim, Nidhogg Tail Beam

This is where the boss battle gets real. You will now have Freya aiding you, but Nidhogg will be far more dangerous now. Nidhogg will go to one of three spots on the screen. Whether he is coiled around a stone pillar, or perched on the edge of the arena will dictate his moveset. When he is wrapped around either of the stone pillars, it will fire a beam of Bifrost energy from its tail. It will sweep its beam firing tail across the screen, back and forth. You just need to roll through it. Beyond that, it will create rifts in space and time which it will use to stab you with its tail. Just stay mobile and roll away from the tail attack. If Nidhogg raises its tail and a yellow inღdicator ring appears around it, a projectile is about to be shot at you. Just parry it or dodge it; either way, these projectiles are slow.

God Of War Ragnarok, Vanaheim, Nidhogg Preparing To Fire The Unblockable Projectile

When Nidhogg is perched on the ledge, it will open up its belly, sucking in debris. After it does this, it will do one of two things. If the red indicator appears, that means it will fire a powerful projectile at you, at which point you need to roll away. Otherwise, it will spit all the debris back out in a huge, unavoidable scattershot. However, while it isn't avoidable, it is blockable. So, if you see a red ring, dodge. If there is no indicator ring, block. It is as easy as that! Nidhogg will also use that tail plunge attack from the second phase. So, make sure to shield bash it when it does.

God Of War Ragnarok, Vanaheim, Hitting Fraya's Targets To Drop Nidhogg

In between attacks, Nidhogg will often take large pauses. That will be your time to land hits. After a while, you will be assisted by Freya, who will give you targets to hit with your axe or blades (it depends on which column Nidhogg is clinging to). Once she does, you will be able to topple the giant creature and really lay into it. It won't take long for the mighty Nidhogg to fall after you start pulling those columns down.

The Western Barri Woods

God Of War Ragnarok, Vanaheim, Using Freya's Power To Break Through Those Vines

This section exists almost exclusively to teach you how to use Freya's tools. It starts with you clearing a set of vines by hitting one of her hexes with your axe. You will then do the same in the next screen to gain access to a chest. From there you will fight a few Einherjar, where the game will tell you how to use Freya's hexes to weaken enemies. Once you clear out the Einherjar you will enter into the Western Barri Woods proper. Take the first right, clear out the vines and grab the chest. Then head back to the main path. You will encounter another poison plant puzzle. This time there are two plants! Youꦿ just need to put a hex on one, then freeze it. Now, remove your axe, and then freeze the other. The hex holds the freezing effect.

God Of War Ragnarok, Vanaheim, The Chest After The Poison

Once you clear out the poison, take your next left, destroy the vines, and open another chest. Head back to the main path, fight a few Wisps (you can only damage them after hitting them with Freya's arrows), and then head into the next area. You will watch a brief cutscene. Now go interact with the Lore Tablet and move on to the next area. Here you will find a chest that is being protected by a plant. Set the bulbous section of the plant on fire, and you will be able to get to the treasure chest.

God Of War Ragnarok, Vanaheim, Fighting More Goons

Next, you will fight another small group of Einherjar. Then you will find yourself on a bridge made from a tree branch. There will be another one of those living plants guarding a chest on your left. You won't be able to reach it, unfortunately. What you need to do is lay down a line of hexes from Freya, that leads from where you can reach and goes all the way to the bulb. Light these on fire, and they will start a chain reaction. You can now swing across and claim your prize.

God Of War Ragnarok, Vanaheim, Chaining The Hexes Together To Clear The River

You will now arrive back at Freyr's camp. From here, you will leave the camp, collect one more treasure entangled in vines (it will be on your left), and open up a path to a canoe. The last puzzle of this section of the game is pretty similar to the puzzle we just solved. Create a path of hexes that leads to the vines covering the obstruction, light it on fire, and now all there will be left is a log that needs to be destroyed with sonic arrows. Press up on the d-pad and that will switch Freya's arrow type. Now fire at it, break the log, and take a pleasant boat ride all the way to the end. There'll be one more chest waiting at the end.

If you don't have the ability to switch arrow types, you need to buy sonic arrows from Brok.
