It will be interesting to see how Assassin’s Creed Shadows tu🌊rns out, which seems on the face of it to be the Ubisoft game most similar to Tsushima, and whether it will truly be as vast as Origins, Odyssey, and Valhalla before it. Bigger isn’t always better.
The more I read into it, the more I think Outlaw’s Tsushima influence isn’t that far-fetched after all. I enjoyed it more than the averag𒀰e gamer, and many people look at me strangely when I say it hits me much harder than Horizon Zero Dawn ever did. Sucker Punch took the open-world formula that Ubisoft establish😼ed and decided it needed to be streamlined and given a purpose that extended beyond visiting every point on the map to achieve 100 percent completion.
It cuts things down for a start, allowing you to earn the Platinum Trophy and see everything it has to offer iಞn just 30–40 hours, instead of forcing yꦏou to stick around. Every landmark you’re climbing to gain a vantage point and seek out treasure, every enemy encampment you clear, and every secret you discover feels swift and satisfying, giving you the means to grow into a powerful samurai who can slaughter dozens of Mongols in seconds.
There is a true sense of personal progression that stops Tsushima from ever feeling like a grind, even when it has all the hallmarks that hinder other games. You’ll greet foxes, chill in hot springs, and speak to boring villagers, but there aren't enough of them for it to feel like a waste of time.
On the other hand, Ubisoft has opted to make most of its open world titles filled to the brim for the sake of it. I will never see everything Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, Origins, Valhalla, or the upcoming Shadows has to🍌 offer, and I don’t think they want me to.
I’m supposed to stay engaged with the content, not enamoured with the story or my place in the world, and that is where Ghost of Tsushima succe🅷eds where so many other modern♌ open worlds fail. So I’m pleasantly surprised that Star Wars Outlaws is embracing that philosophy instead of becoming a bloated mess. Maybe Ubisoft realises that we want to explore a galaxy far, far away that doesn’t try to waste our time.
Speaking to , creative director Julian Gerighty explained Outlaws’ inspirational relationship with Tsushima: “What I loved about [Ghost of Tsushima] was this purity of having a player fantasy and really leaning into it. This is the story, the world, the characters, everything൲ fits together with the gameplay guiding everything.”
He’s right. A good open-world game has side activities aplenty, but they need to enhance the core narrative experience rather than take away from i🦩t. Allow us to meet fresh characters or spend time with existing ones that heighten their position in the story, or work to take out big factions spread across the galaxy as pa🌳rt of various optional quests and encounters.
We will have a number of diverse planets to explore, and the last thing you want is for them all to be the same with a different coat of paint.
