While it's often refered to as Mortal Kombat 9, the 2011 MK game is technically just called Mortal Kombat. So, it shares a name with the original game in the fighting franchise. The reason for this is that it was a soft reboot of the series. As such, the story takes place 🐻in a different timeline.

However, it isn't a complete narrative depature, as the story is connected to the seventh main game in the series, and it re-tells altered versions of the stories from the first three games.
