Summary

  • Elden Ring is the first open-world Soulsborne game, but it sticks rigidly to the NPC quest structure of From's linear titles.
  • This makes the enigmatic puzzles of past games needlessly obtuse and confusing as you're trying to piece together disparate narratives across a sprawling map.
  • It doesn't need quest markers (even though certain quests, like the Volcano Manor ones, do have markers). Even just a quest log would remedy the problem.

Soulsborne games never have traditional quests. You meet vague and nondescript characters strewn across crumbling civilisations, mumbling riddles as they search for a purpose in a world without. There are no journals or map markers, you simply bump into them again and again on the road, helping at each turn if you so choose. Their directions aren’t always clear, but the linearity of each Soulsborne world makes it easy enough to follow along regardless of how cryptic their stories may be. 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Elden Ring completely lost that.

It’s the first open-world Soulsborne, and while there&rsquoও;s a clear path marked by a flowing golden aura from each Site of Grace, there’s no one way to beat the game. That’s encapsulated in each quest, as characters found in Limgrave may take you all the way to Mt. Gelmir and the Consecrated Snowfield, or they might loop around Liurnia and Caelid while staying local. There’s a lot of backtracking and easy-to-miss directions and clues, because the world is that much bigger and more open by nature.

Elden Ring Sellen

One of my favourite questlines is 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Sorceress Sellen. It’s a tragic tale of the character’s unchecked arrogance and a lust for knowledge so enthralling that her humanity literally whittles away. You find her in the Waypoints Ruin Cellar behind a Mad Pumpkin Head, hiding as she waits for someone strong enough to come along. We later find out that she is an illusion and her true form is shackled in the Witchbane Ruins. Her quest sees you tracking down some of the most renowned scholars of the Raya Lucaria Academy for their prized magics until eventually, you rescue Sellen from her prison, but without a guide, you'll probably be completely lost.

The first major step is the most difficult—you have to find the Comet Azur spell, which as it turns out🃏 is at Mt. Gelmir, beyond the Altus Plateau, north of Liurnia. You have to wind around the Volcano Manor and reach the Primeval Sorcerer Azur grace by the Hermit Village. 🎐It’s one hell of a trek for a single spell, especially when the next sorcerer you’re sent to find is only in Caelid, with more overt clues as to their whereabouts.

Once you’ve gathered each spell, you then need to speak to Witch-Hunter Jerren, the man who starts the Radahn Festival. In hindsight, it does make sense; you find her true form in the Witchbane Ruins and the only Witch-Hꦚunter we know of is Jerren. But everything is clear with hindsight. In the moment, the two felt like they belonged to completely disconnected stories, so I struggled to piece together the next step.

Elden Ring was even worse at launch. There were no icons for NPCs on the map, so rememberi▨ng who was where was a puꦰzzle in its own right. But adding icons alone doesn’t make the quests clear.

The world is massive and the lack of linearity makes it much harder to figure out where you need to go next and what will abruptly end any lingering quests. It’s a lot to juggl✤e, and even with a notepad, all I ended up with were confused ramblings. The Soulsborne quest structure doesn’t fit well when applie🎃d to an open world, but it’s not just the complexity of quests and the lack of linearity, it’s also the sheer number of them.

Gowry's Shack Elden Ring

I just did a new playthrough of Elden Ring, after earning the platinum trophy and having reviewed Shadow of the Erdtree, where I completed ever𒁏y single quest in the game—all 29, including endings.

There are several I had originally missed or never finished, like Boc, Diallos, Jar-Bairn, and Nepheli Loux, and 🐭the only way I was even remotely capable of juggling this many disparate threads without an in-game log was via . I could tick off my progress and make sure I had done everything I could in one area before I mov♊ed onto the next to avoid messing up any other quests.

It’s not just handy, it’s vital. There’s no way I’d be able to do every single possible quest without it. Elden Ring director Hidetaka Miyazaki said that he thinks the game has failed if you need guides. For the main story, it’s incredibly simple to follow as giant golden lines direct you along the main road, so▨ I 🧜don’t think Elden Ring failed in that regard. But for NPC quests, it absolutely did.

Elden Ring jerrens armor

If FromSoftware delves back into the open world genre after Elde𝔍n Ring, it needs to be less obtuse. A quest log or even just a script of all the dialogue you’ve heard up until that point would cut through so much of the noi🙈se.

Elden Ring tells some of the most personal and poignant stories we’ve ever had in a Soulsborne game, but I doubt the average player will see most of these ꦿto the end. It’s a shame, especially since the problem 🍒is one that open world games already solved decades ago.
