From the moment it was announced as Project Athia, its existence felt like a product of focus testing and a boardroom of grumpy boomer executives trying to draw blood from a stone.

All the ingredients for a successful open world fantasy adventure are present, but it means nothing without a soul to bring them to life. Frey Holland’s journey is one of endless boxes being ticked to create something to 𝔉a template, instead of the innovative ideas and designs the very best video games are spawned from. Square Enix taking it behind the shed and putting a bullet in the back of its head so soon after launch only confirms that.

Writer Gary Whitta has come out 𒀰and publicly discussed his involvement following launch, stating that aside from the character of Frey and the initial foundations of the fantasy world, that most of the finished game is unlike anything he had planned. This is both a clever thing to do when𒆙 a project you’re attached to is a bit rubbish, and a damnation of an experience its creator should have far more faith in.

Whitta was asked to come back, but was occupied and left the folks at Square to reboot things and go in another direction. A shame it decided to walk right off a cliff. Forspoken cost millions to make and involved the hard work of hund✅reds who put their blood, sweat, and tears into something they believed in. No matter the final product, to see it cast aside with such indifference must make you feel like shit.

No💫w the good folks💖 over at Luminous are destined to be a support studio for more important games going forward. It’s a bummer that one of the few new IPs of this generation is so devoid of creative charm, and those of us with even the slightest bit of foresight could see its failure coming. From the first narrative trailer, it was evident how unimaginative it all seemed, and how a westernised take on beloved Japanese conventions was only going to dilute all the tropes fans have come to fall in love with.

It could have worked with a different execution, but Forspoken’s identity is dismissive of the insp💞iration it pulls from by design, and thus was always going to fall out of our good graces. It’s like Final Fantasy meets Assassin’s 💞Creed meets a Marvel movie, and I promise it’s super cool, fun, edgy, and down with the kids. Yet despite miraculously being all of those things, the eventual result is one of astounding mediocrity.

Video games are reaching a point in their photorealistic ambition and maturity that to create a title like Forspoken takes se🥀veral years, and many of the character quirks and de♒sign ideas it plans to implement will likely have run their course long before it crosses the finish line. It is an unfortunate flaw to triple-A development I’m unsure we’ll ever have the ability to conquer, even more so when so many games are made with generic templates and corporate goals in mind.

Profit goes above artistic intent, meaning that anyone willi🌠ng to read into anything beneath the surface will find things lacking. We are throwing away years of potential and forcing huge teams to crunch away on blockbuster monoliths that appeal to audiences who will consume and discard them without ⛄a second thought. Knowing that something bigger, better, and more accomplished could be produced with even the slightest bit of awareness.

Forspoken isn’t the first and will be far from the last when it comes to publishers throwing millions of dollars and years of hard work into video games that have no chance of success, because there was no heart to their creation in the first place. Perhaps in another universe, it might have been 𝓀different since the people who brought it to life deserve better than Square Enix throwing them under the bus mere weeks after it’s labelled a disappointment.
