Starship Troopers, the late ‘90s Paul Verhoeven classic that inspired Helldivers 2, has enjoyed a new lease on life thanks to the game. The comparisons are easy to draw and the ‘I’m doing my part’ meme has been working over time in recent weeks. I’ve not seen Starship Troopers and even I can see Arrowhead has drawn inspiration from it. That might be part of the reason why I don’t feel like a Starship Trooper when I dive. Not Arnie who was Governor of California - although I&🌺rsquo;m su𒐪re even civilian Schwarzenggar could lend a significant hand in the fight for managed democracy. No, I feel like Arnie as Dutch in Predator. It didn’t occur to me to compare Helldivers to Predator until my first encounter with a Terminid Stalker. Giant bugs that can turn invisible meaning you usually don’t see them until it’s almost too late. Just like the titular Predator.
Se💧riously, how has there been so much uproar about flying bugs when there are ones you can&rsquo🐻;t see until they’re already sinking their teeth into you?
My first encounter with a Stalker went about ♎as well as you’d expect. Thrown to the floor yelling what the hell was that as a fellow Helldiver informed me “Oh yeah, there are invisible ones now”. The first thing I saw after being reinforced was the same Stalker having a go at the teamma♎te I received a late warning from before it turned invisible again and scurried away.
Except it didn’t turn invisible, at least not entirely. It had that same almost-invisible mirrored effect that the Predator has when it use🌞s its cloaking tech. It was at that point I knowingly went full Dutch for the first time. Sprinting up to the rock the Stalker had disappeared behind, carefully planni🍒ng my next move. This is unlike me — so far in Helldivers 2, my signature moves tend to be running in front of my teammates as they’re shooting and getting blown to bits by my own orbital strikes.
The Stalker’s attention now on a fellow Helldiver, I got the jump on the bug and filled it with lead, green blood splattering all over the ground as I did so. There were so many similarities between it and Predator at this point, I was convinced it had to be an homage rather than a coincidence. The only thing missing is the Stalker admitting defeat and♛ blowing itself up, although I appreciate the Predator-like traits ending there. Worrying about that while desperately trying to keep a hold of my samples is the last thing I need.
Since that first Stalker encounter, I’ve noticed the feeling that I’m Arnie in Predator has been there all along. Crawling through the mud to check on a Terminid nest, praying I don’t get noticed before I’ve made the first move. Running for my life to the extraction point so I can be rescued f𝓰rom an unfamiliar area where I’ve just been battling for my life against a savvy alien life form. I’ve been Arnie this entire time. The only difference is I died a lot more than he did. Predator would have been a very short movie if me and my fellow Helldivers had been its stars.
Clearly the Helldivers team at Arrowhead must be Schwarzeneggar fans because over on the other side of the galaxy are Automatons, robots that look a lot like Terminators. Blood thirsty machines designed to wipe out the human race? Come on. Next thing you know there will be one that can turn into liquid metal that never runs out of stamina and can heal itself after getting shot. Oh, no, forget I said that. With Automatons covering Terminator and Stalker’s exhibiting the same characteristics as Predator, it’s hard to see what else from Arnie’s back catalog Helldivers🌠 might pull inspiration from next. Perhaps a customization option that can make your Helldiver look suspiciously like Danny DeVito, or a Christmas update wh🌄ere your objective is to fight your way across a war torn planet to find a toy for your son before the holidays. Just no official crossovers, please, I prefer the subtle nods and need for imagination.
