To be honest, I wanted to jump into the Pixel Remaster of Final Fantasy 6 for a long time, but its garish font options turned me off. It looked, from the outside, like little more than a rezzed-up mobile port rather than a loving modern revival. Thankfully, that’s been fixed, and a load of other graphical and mechanical enhancements make it a dream to play, even on a high-end 4K display. Each title is finally being given the respect it deserves, and ensuring they’re playable on ever🧔y platform under the sun in 2024 is vitally important for both preservation and enjoyment.

I first played Final Fantasy 6 as part of the Final Fantasy Anthology, but as a kid I only remember getting past the first boss battle before I stopped playing. I was very im🍸patient...

I’m blown away by how circumstantial Fin💧al Fantasy 6 manages to feel, and how I’ve absorbed so many of its iconic moments through cultural osmosis over the years. The brief intro of the world you will come to inhabit and how after thousands of years people still live in fear of the magic that once destroyed it, or the glacial melancholic drudging througꦰh the snow as three suits of magitek armor march forward into the unknown as the credits roll all still hit so hard.

It instils an instant feeling of intrigue within you that permeates throughout the entire game as you assemble a ragtag crew of characters all trying to find hope in the midst of a hopeless world. At the centre is an amnesiac called Terra, one of the few living being♉s able to perform magic, who in a past life was used as a ruthless weapon by the Gestahlian Empire.

The Pixel Remaster comes with a ‘Classic Filter’ designed to ape the look of an older CRT television, but🍌 I’d rather the modern presentation over something this washed out and artificial.

Square Eni🔯x wanted to make every single party member you encounter in Final Fantasy 6 feel like the main character, like if you viewed the entire game from their perspective, much of the main narrative would still make sense. I’m not so sure if it succeeded in this ambition, but everyone I’ve encountered so far already feels nuanced in their own way.

Animation plays a big part in that endearment, and than🎀ks to th🅰e pixel remasters, I have a newfound appreciation for how it manages to achieve so much with so little. Much of what makes animation in Final Fantasies 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 so special is covered in an amazing YouTube series from , which takes a deep dive into the movements and poses utilised by each game both in battle and on the field, and how despite each new character being made up of just a few pixels, animation brings their personalities to life.

Previously, I’d often disregard the animation in games like Final Fantasy 6 due to how simple it is on the surface. I thought the writing would have to do the heavy lifting in the absence of its visuals. When the series moved to 3D, it had so much more to work ꦰwith, which is partly why younger fans like me view them more favourably, if they think about the games that came before at all. But the truth is, I was ignorant. And now I find myself playing through Final Fantasy 6 for the first time. I’m watching every little move or gesture the characters make with a smile on my face. They’re quite magical to witness.

In the opening alone, we watch Terra transform from a catatonic killing machine into a scared young woman who has lost all of her memories, yet behind that anxiety sits an aura of brave confidence. When fellow party members learn she can use magic duཧring a boss battle, some dialogue plays out where she returns to the field with a pixelated wink. It’s just a single dot blinking on her tiny little avatar, but it’s enough to show she means business and believes in herself.

Another scene has Edgar and Locke conversing out of sight, and a single angle change in how𒊎 they’re standing and their eyes pointing in different directions im💃mediately tells us that they are whispering. Body language like this was essential back then because games were yet to reach a place where more complicated human expression was possible.

It flirted with minimalism out of necessity, and decades later, it’s now appreciated because of everything the game achieved in spite of its position. It’s endlessly charming and draws emotion from me in ways I didn’t expect. Every character has different attacks, deaths, laughs, and more bespoke animations that are designed to represent their per💮sonalities.

Square Enix worked within its limitations at every turn, bu🍸t knew it wanted these characters to feel like real people we could relate to and root for, and it accomplished that. Animation📖 in Final Fantasy 6 and all the pixel entries before it are ripe with purpose and personality that, in retrospect, pushed boundaries because they had to, and all these years later, they still shine so brightly.
