Final Fantasy 7: Vincent Valentine's Backstory, Explained
Ev🍨eryone loves the dark and brooding Vincent Valentine from Final Fantasy 7, but how did he end up as the monster we know him to be?
One such character is CIssnei, who many will encounter for the first time in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. However, Cissnei has a history that explains her appearance and involvement with Cloud, though it's only revealed in Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunion.
Cissnei's Role Prior To Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth
Prior to Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Cissnei's only appearance was in Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 (and the remake Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunion). Not appearing in the original release of FInal Fantasy 7, many never encountered Cissnei at any point in Cloud's journey, but she played an important role in Zack Fair's life.
Though comparatively small, her part shaped a kind🍷er and conflicted theme across Crisis Core. Her loyalty is tested repeatedly, and she is forced to choose between her duty and her friendships.
Early Life
In her early life, Cissnei grew up in an orphanage until she was 🌼eventually adopted. She was raised to become a Turk and took her training very seriously. This training taught her to view everyone as an enemy, which compromised some of her social skills as she gre♊w older.
Her dedication led her to become the youngest person recruited by the Turks, which proved to be an impressive accomplishment. Despite viewing e𝔉veryone as a pote🔴ntial threat, Cissnei befriended Tseng, Reno, and Rude through her work.
The Genesis War
During the Genesis war that takes place in Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunion, Cissnei befriends Zack Fair and works closely with him on several occasions. They fight Genesis copies together and Cissnei reveals that she's always wanted a pair of wings for herself to symbolize her freedom.
Later, in Costa del Sol, Cissnei is tasked with monitoring Zack Fair. His loyalty to Shinra is in question, and Cissnei's distinctive viewpoint allows her to eye him carefully as a potential threat. The trip is disguised as a vacation, which is ended early after Genesis attacks are reported in Junon.
Cissnei focused on evacuating the people of Junon. Zack later praised her for her work, stating that she could be a Turk supervisor soon. Her difficult childhood convinced her that upward mobility in her career wouldn't be possible, but the other Turks – and Zack – changed her mind.
It's suggested that Cissnei may have romantic feelings towards Zack, but it's never discussed blatantly.
Later, she co🐷ntacted Zack to apologize for the ruined vacation and for her assignment. Throughout Crisis Core, she continues to email Zack and discuss her assignments, reading LOVELESS, and future p💖lans upon his return to Midgar.
Conflicting Loyalties
Cissnei was later tasked with tracking down "research samples" that escaped. Though she wasn't certain of her feelings, they grew more conflicted upon finding out that the fugitives were none other than Zack Fair and Cloud Strife.
Following through with her duties, she attacked. Zack refused to hurt her, and she realized that Cloud was suffering from mako poisoning. She called Tseng and lied about losing the target, buying🍰 timeꦚ for the two to escape. Not long after, she encountered Zack and Cloud again, this time in Gongaga.
She warns them of the heightened security in the area due to Angeal Hewley's presence. She gave Zack a few minutes to escape, once again breaking from her obligations as a Turk. Cissnei takes it upon herself to look out for Zack's family since they're worried about him.
Cissnei reveals that her real name is not Cissnei, though she doesn't get a chance to share what her real name is to Zack.
Once Genesis was defeated, Tseng tasked Cissnei with locating Zack and Cloud to bring 👍them back. She boards a helicopter to try and find them, but comes up empty-handed. After contacting Reno and Rude and learning their search was also fruitless,🏅 Cissnei had to move on.
Not much is known of what became of Cissnei in the aftermath of Crisis Core's story, but it can be assumed that she went on her own path.
Cissnei's Role In Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth
Making her first appearance in a mainline game, Cissnei returns for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. She's left behind her Turk origins and uniform to move to Gongaga, Zack's hometown.
Working tirelessly, Cissnei took on the role as the region's coalition captain. She's very involved in the community and displays her more compassionate qualities now that she's free of the Turks. Her redesigned outfit amplifies this, showing a lighter side to her.
Unlike in the past, this older version of Cissnei shows that she's embraced her work in the coalition and knows that her loyalty and duties overlap in this knew role.
