168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth has a strong cast of party members who each get their own side quests, story arcs, and fair share of the spotlight. But it is Cloud Strife's game first and foremost. He is who we play as, he is the default party leader for combat, and he is the one who drives the central story forward. It's Cloud's game. And despite brief sections as Zack, in my 30 hours it took me to get through to Chapter 7, it has always been Cloud's game. But then it decides to become 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Tomb Raider for a little bit, and that's rad.
As you explore the Corel mines in Chapter 7, Cloud will have a dizzy spell and need to rest up, where Aerith and Red XIII stay back to look after him. While this is clearly foreshadowing something in Cloud's health, mental state, or memories, it also means we have an extended section away from Cloud. For this part, we play as Yuffie leading a team of Barret and Tifa, and that allows the game to try something different.
Yuffie Makes An Ideal Party Leader In Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth
In some ways, Yuffie is an odd choice for second in command. She only joined the party a few hours earlier, and each of the other characters has something to put forward. The region of Corel has deep significance to Barret, who is also the party's protector and most ideological figure, while Tifa is the most iconic character after Cloud and shares his youthful experiences with Sephiroth. Meanwhile, Aerith and Red XIII have the strongest connection to the Shinra arc, particularly as this incident happens soon after a fight with Hojo. But Yuffie makes a lot of sense, especially from a player point of view.
Yuffie was the lead of Episode Intermission, 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Remake's DLC, so we've already played for a significant amount of time as her. Those of us playing with knowledge of the original 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Final Fantasy 7 may have forged deep bonds with the original cast, but for newcomers, Yuffie having already been playable is a considerable ace up her mooglefied sle♐eves. It also allows for unique and slick traversal using her gadgets, in a way someone slower and more powerful like Barret wou🌞ld not be able to accommodate.
The fact we've already played as Yuffie also makes it easier on the developer, and with development cycles and budgets 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:in the unsustainable place they are, that's an important factor too.
Despite 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:🐻the fuss made over yellow paint in the demo, there is not a lot of platforming in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, or at least not in the first 7 chapters I've played. In the open world, Cloud may climb (or ride a chocobo) from one place to the next in order to introduce verticality to the game, but mostly you're wandering along dirt roads, fighting fiends, and discovering caves. It's not until we play as Yuffie that some actual platforming comes into play.
Yuffie Kisaragi: Tomb Raider
We swing from bars and cut ropes and leap to new platforms. We lower bridges and turn on conveyor belts and slide down poles. We swing and land and turn and swing again. We climb and dive and solve puzzles. It's only a short section, and the gameplay is pretty simplistic compared to Tomb Raider or its modern cousins 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Uncharted and 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Assassin's Creed, but there is a frantic fluidity to the action that Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth has so far only managed in its combat. Yuffie adds a new feeling of discovery to everything, and it's a shame her section is so linear with only very specific solutions available, with no prizes greater than a potion for wandering off the beaten path.
However, it does end with a bang. After ascending to the top of the mine shaft and meeting a teeny baby chocobo they nickname Cloud Jnr. because of his hair, we're in for a ride. For this part, we control Barret and Yuffie equally, but Yuffie's motion sickness still makes it feel like her section - especially as we pick a route with her in mind. Riding the cart all the way back down to a now recovered Cloud (should that be Cloud Snr.?), we shoot nearby boxes and throw Yuffie's oversized ninja star to grab prizes. It's the sort of low stakes, high action kinetic sequence all those trashy platform adventure games used to have before we got a little too serious about everything.
There are so many high points to Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth's gameplay even just at the halfway mark, but Yuffie's breakaway adventure is definitely one of the most surprising and the most rewarding of the lot. I hope there's more to come, and I'm glad Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth keeps taking fresh swings at old ideas.
