Summary

  • Buying at least three drinks for a Porxie King mount code isn't a bad price for FF14 fans, but it can get pricey if you want the keychains too.
  • Collaboration events like FF14 x Gong cha usually have issues, like limited availability and inconsistent rules.
  • Ultimately though, I'll always cave in and get the merch.

Last weekend, I forced my family to drive nearly two hours north to visit Bristol so I could order bubble tea from Gong cha, buying far more drinks than I needed, all for the sake of obtaining a digital mount for 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Final Fantasy 14 and a keychain. Were my family impressed? No. However, 🅰it is one super cute mount. A flying pig wearing a crown? Yes please.

I’m a sucker for all things merch. Both digital and physical, and 🅘if it accomplishes both in one fell swoop? Even better. I buy every FF14 book, CD, and plush to ensure I get the digital minion code that comes with it. It should come as no surprise then that I wanted the Porxie King mount and the keychains that are currently available as part of the FF14 x Gong cha collaboration event.

You have to buy at least three drinks in one transaction to get a code for the mount. Drinks vary between £5-7 so you’re looking at spending £15-21 to get the Porxie King. Mounts available via Square Enix’s online store are often £13-25, so it’s not a bad price. However, the same rule applies to the keychains. If you want the mount and all three keychains, you’ll be buying 12 drinks and forking out £60-80. As much as I love merch, even I couldn’t bear the thought of spending that much, so I se🌳ttled for just the one keychain alongside my mount.

While the products themselves are great, the problem with collaboration events like this is that there are generally fewer pros than cons. While my Free Company are attempting to plan a meet at Gong cha, a great excuse for us to meet for fun while making the most of the collaboration, for many other players there just aren’t any Gong cha storesnearby. This means they’re left going without or forced to 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:pay the horrendous prices scalpers are charg𒅌ing.

The problems don’t end there either. My Twitter feed is full of all things FF14, and therefore all things Gong cha at present, and the event seems to have hit a few bumps in the road. Some have reported store clerks giving away more codes than they should, rather than sticking to the limit. Great for the person receiving, but not so great for those trying to get one down the line if they run out. And things have already started to run out within days of the event starting. The FF14-themed drinks and keychains have been amongst the first to sell out in many stores, with posters hastily being thrown up to announce to dismayed customers that they may have travelled two hours for nothing. Thﷺe keychains appear 🍬to be the most sought-after item, and the most limited.

It's hardly surprising the keychains are more sought-after than the mo🔜unt considering it's not all that different from the Portly Porxie mount available in game. Essentially the same pig, just without the crown.

I could tell the staff in the Gong cha I visited hated the event. Their tired expressions practically screamed ‘I’m sick of asking grown adults which silly animal keychain they want’. Lots of customers were paying for the drinks and specifically asking to not 🎀receive the actual drinks. All they wanted was the merch, or at a push, the merch and the empty FF14-themed cups. But not the drinks themselves. Anyone attempting to go up to the counter was promptly redirected to the self-service machines, and honestly, I don’t blame the staff for it. I remember working at GAME when the Fortnite Minty Pickaxe deal was happening and we hated it just as much. Sadly we didn’t have self-service machines to direct people to.

A player on the Porxie King mount in Final Fantasy 14.

This isn’t the first FF14 collab event I’ve rushed out to buy things for. Years back I bought three GameMaster magazines to get a code for the Original Fat Chocobo mount. I’ve also been on the receiving end of missing out on collabs, as some have not been availabꦬle in my region. In Japan, there was a FF14 x KFC that gave an Eat Chicken emote, while a GrubHub collab gave an Eat Pizza emote. However, there is hope yet for those missing🅠 out on Gong cha.

The GrubHub promotion was very similar in that the consistency with which codes were given out seemed to vary, and codes ran out fast and were scalped for hundreds of pounds within hours of the event going live. Unfortunately for those who shelled out the big bucks for this emote, a couple of years later Square Enix made the emote available on its online store for a mere £4.03. So the silver lining here is that maybe, just maybe, two years from now the Porxie King mount will be made a🌼vailable on the online store. However, the keychains will likely remain forever limitedꩲ to this event and forever overpriced on eBay.

I don’t even like bubble tea. But I bought six of them for a digital pig and a keychain. I love both, but ultimately I can’t help having mixed feelings about the event. It’s fun and it’s great to give fans something special outside of the game, and while I realise there is no perfect solution in finding a company available worldwide so all players can participate, I do feel like theyꦛ could have foreseen how popular the event would be and stocked up on things a bit more. And charged less.
