Summary

  • The Scions of the Seventh Dawn are becoming overused and repetitive.
  • Krile and G'raha offer freshness and intrigue to the storyline, but are sidelined by the entire gang being present.
  • Dawntrail lacks that promised 'fresh start' feel, with Scions hindering story progression a little.

168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Final Fantasy 14’s story is a long one. It spans over a decade of adventures, from humble beginnin🏅gs that grow to saving a continent before the arc’s climactic ending saving the entire universe. We don’t go it alone, though - it’s a story about the Scions of the Seventh Dawn, resolute heroes, academics, and warriors, who we as the Warrior of Light proudly call allies. The Scions stick together through thick and thin and are beloved characters both in and out of the FF14 universe.

Dawntrail spoilers below!

But we shouldn’t have taken them with us to Dawntrail. This is a sweeping statement, of course, and I have some personal exceptions that I’ll touch on, but for the most part, the Scions feel overdone. Dawntrail is supposed to be the beginning of a new story arc, and we’re still fighting alongside Alphinaud and Alisaie, two Scions who are first seen in the very first cutscene of the entire game. Their character arcs are complete and they have a rich new purpose in life, so them being forced onto our boat all for the sake of ‘vacaওtion’ feels like a limp𓄧 excuse to keep familiar faces around.

Stacey Henley chats with Meg Pelliccio and Ryan Bamsey about 🥃the mixed feelings around Final Fantasy 14's Dawntrail expansion.

For the start of a new story, Dawntrail is far too plagued by character beats we’ve seen too many times before. Alisaie throws a strop at not being included on an excursion, Y’shtola pops in simply to know the answers to questions, while Thancred and Urianger mostly show up to take part in the fight against Valigarmanda and play Daddy once more to push Koana along his predictable character arc. In the end, their inclusioไn is a misstep that feels repetitive and proof that the fake disbanding of the Scions of the Seventh Dawn should perhaps have been a real one.

This isn’t to say they should disappear forever. Dawntrail also manages to prove that there are interesting di🎶rections to take these characters; Krile’s narrative is a compelling one and serves up some intrigue around a historically underused character and manages to drop some fantastic lore reveals, and G’raha Tia manages to serve up the most touching cutscene in the expac.

Iᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚ⁤⁤⁤⁤ᩚ⁤⁤⁤⁤ᩚ⁤⁤⁤⁤ᩚ𒀱ᩚᩚᩚf our party of allies was pared down to this duo and more effort was placed on developing the new characters (especially the likes of Koana and Erenville), I doubt Dawntrail would be getting as mixed a reception as it is. As it stands, Krile’s reason for being in Tural is stifled by the story’s hyperfocus on Wuk Lamat, and G’raha’s promised adventure is too short and delayed until the very end.

Estinien is the Scion who got the best deal. He gets to avoid the drama of the main storyline, shows off his skills in brief cameos, 🐎and only sticks around when the proverbial mess hits the🌄 fan.

With the Scions being disbanded in name only and all of them (bar Tataru, poor Tataru) getting more than their fair share of exposure, Dawntrail doesn’t🅺 feel li♕ke the fresh start it’s supposed to be. Rather, it’s the side quest y🌳ou do after the main story is completed because it takes too long. The Spider-Man: No Way Home after Endgame, if you will.

The new characters are interesting and fun to be around, but travelling with our old pals introduces some annoying limitations to where the story can go. Multiple times in the story we’re forced to watch forced 1v1 duels that end in disaster when any one of the Scions could sneeze the villains out of relevance if given the chance. We’re introduced to problems that w💮e have literally solved before, like aether imbalances and energy shortages, but our hard-earned knowledge and experience are hedged by contrived plot points🌠 to force the story forward. Having the Scions who saved existence around for these story beats makes them seem incompetent in retrospect.

The narrative would have far more weight if we were going it alone. Let Estinen have his fun vacation, give Krile her day in the limelight, and finally let G’raha have a full adventure that doesn’t end with him sacrificing himself or crying about his failures. Let Final Fantasy 14 breathe, unburdened by the legacy of the Seventh Dawn.🐲 I enjoyed Dawntrail, I promise, but for every high, I noticed a low that was more often than not Scion-shaped.
