When I was a kid, I had a little robot toy called the 2-XL. The ‘90s one that actually looks like a robot, not the ‘80s one that looks like a nightmare. Anyway, this robot could play regular audio cassettes like a stereo - but more importantly, it could also play special cassettes that had trivia and games on them. It was a little interactive toy, fun for a few minutes at a time; an awkwardly-shaped boombox with minor computer components. It felt cool to use and even cooler to show to friends who were delighted and confused in equal measure. And, for some reason, it reminds me of the Playdate.

Readers, I caved. I got hold of a Playdate. Blame Lucas Pope, 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:his excellent games, and the fact his latest is exclusive to the cranky little console. I’ve been playin🧸g a lot of Mars After Midnight, which is excellent, but there are plenty of other games that have caught my attention, too. The ones I’m most drawn to seem to always use the Playdate’s unique crank as a central function, and I’ve found myself cranking all day and all night.

Of all the big exciting games I got to see at PAX West this past weekend, the one I was looking forward to the most was a 1-bit alien support group sim on the ultra-niche Playdate ༺handheld. Yes, this is what being a peak gamer looks like. You can keep your Starfields and Spider-men, I’m here for Mars After Midnight.

2022 was an exceptionally strange year for video games, both full of surprising releases destined to become classics and high-profile disappointments. Pair that with near-constant delays of games both big and small, and a constant barrage of news stories that reminded me how rough this industry can be, and you wind up with a year when I found it hard to get excited about the vide𒆙o games I was playing. Thaꦏt said, there were a handful of games and bits of tech that got me excited during 2022 and reminded me why I love games in the first place.

My Playdate came in the mail this week, and I am enamored by it. The tiny yellow handheld is everything manufacturer Panic promised it would be. The LCD is stunning, ဣthe sound is incredible, and using th🌱e little yellow crank is such a fun new way to interact with games. I want to carry it around with me everywhere, just so people will ask me about it.
