If you asked fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender who their favorite character was, a lot of people would say Toph Beifong. And for a good reason. Toph kind of took the world of Avatar by storm with her appearance ♌in all its contradicto🥃ry glory.
At first glance, this small girl doesn’❀t look like much, but underneath that seemingly innocent exterior lies an incredibly powerful and slightly devious earthbender. Toph is truly a master of earthbending, combat, and seismic sensing. And she does all of this while being blind. Yep, the world’s most powerful earthbender is a small blind girl, and she’s awesome.
Toph prov🐻ed to be a very good and loyal friend to Aang. Even her personality was pretty entertaining, as she was stubborn, sarcastic, independent, confident, and a bit short-tempered. She’s the kind of person who 🍸doesn’t take crap from anybody, and she’s not afraid to tell you what she thinks of you.
But underneath all of that is a girl who is struggling to prove herself to the world. She grew up being practi⛄cally smothered by her parent’s overprotectiveness, so she responded by carving o♊ut her own path (often literally). This is the type of girl who would respond to you telling her she couldn’t do something with, “Watch me.” And that’s what makes her so inspiring.
But the girl is also a bit scary. Not so much that she’s bad or is planning to take over the world or anything, but the fact that she is incredibly powerful and has some skills and personality aspects that are a little unnerving. So here are 15 facts about Toph 🦩that make her pretty scary.
15 Aren’t You A Little ꦬYoung?
There’s no question about it, Toph is an incredibly powerful earth bender. Not only did she invent new techniques and a new style of bending, but she essentially became an earthbending mast✃er at only 12 years old! She wasn’t even a teenager when she became one of the world’s m☂ost powerful earthbenders.
Toph also learned to earthbend at a very young age too, as she learned from the badgermoles when she was only four. It also makes sense that she got so good since she does rely on her earthbending abil꧙ities to help her “see” the wor🦩ld. Toph doesn’t just earthbend for fun or just because she likes it; it’s literally a way of life for her. So it’s logical that she got so good at it at such a young age.
14 Don’t Make Her Angry 🥀
The best phrase to describe Toph would be “rough around the edges.” Toph is fiercely independent and doesn’t take crap from anybody. As a result, she’s always up for a fight, and she loves it. I mean, she responded to her parent’s over protectiveness by joining an underground (ha, literally) earthbending fight club. This child is a litt𒀰le on the violent side.
But she isn’t always the best with emotions, especially ones of love and compassion. As a result, her ways of expressing affection tend to be a little violent too. (For ☂example, she tends to punch people on the shoulder a🐈fter they have a heart to heart. It’s her way of showing she cares.) So Toph does care, she just shows it in her own rough and tough way.
13 She M👍ade History In Bending
It was established early in the series that an earthbender’s biggest weakness was metal since they couldn’t bend it. That w🔜as why the fire nation had captured several earthbenders and were holding them captive on a metal boat in the middle of the sea. Bu🃏t all of that changes when Toph comes along. Toph essentially invents metalbending.
This shows how powerful and talented Toph is. She figures out through her seismic sensing that metal is still earth, but just more refined. And when she figures this out, it’s just a matter of a few minutes be💫fore she’s metalbending. It’s one thing to invent a new technique, but to invent a whole new subgroup of bending is incredible. She goes on to teach metalbending to others and refines her technique more to where she can even metalbend without having to touch it. That’s one powerful lady.
12 ꦦ She’s Enjoying This A Little Too Much
Remember Melon Lord? Aang and his friend were training and running through some exercises to simulate him taking on the Fire Lord.꧑ Toph was basically given the role of the Fire Lord, so she made a mannequin to look like the Fire Lord for Aang to target. The mannequin had a melon for a head, hence Melon Lord.
All I can say is that Toph had a little too much fun being the bad guy. She actually gave Aang an🌜d his allies a bit of a run as she launched flaming boulders at them. And her maniacal laugh was both hilarious and ♔a little creepy. She also proclaimed that she was no longer Toph, but was Melon Lord. The whole thing was pretty funny, but you had to admit that Toph did her part a little too well.
11 ♒ ⛄ Her Family Is Pretty Dysfunctional
Toph’s relationship with her parents is definitely not the best. (Her father actually pretty much disowns her in the comics when they run into each other). I think they really do love her, but they just didn’t know what to d✱o when she was bor♉n blind. So, they became super over-protective. It’s not surprising that Toph ran away to join Aang.
But then her parents crossed a line. When Toph left, her parents hired two men to go find her and bring her back. And these were the guys who originally tried to kidnap T🌜oph in the first place for ransom. I know her parents think she’s in some kind of danger, but hiring criminals to capture your own daughter is 𓆉going overboard. No wonder she doesn’t get along with them.
10 She Took On King Bumi 🔜
Remember King Bumi, the king of Omashu, Aang’s old childhood friend, now a slightly crazy but surprisingly powerful old man? Well, in the comics that took place after Avatar: The Last Airbenderꦿ, Toph challenged King Bumi to a fight. Well, more like a ♍duel.
Apparently, Toph didn’t take well to someone calling him the greatest earthbender in the 𒆙world, a title she believes she owns solely. Yeesh, Toph, I know you’re very confident in yourself, but this is a little much. So who won? Well, the fight ended up being a draw, and Sokka and the others had to stop the two before things got too out of hand. I guess Toph and King Bumi will have to share the title of the greatest earthbender for now.
9 ꦇ She’s A Lot Stronger Than You Think
When the Aang and the others found the lost library of Wan Shꦏi Tong, Toph stayed at the entrance of the library while everyone else went underground (libraries aren’t really her thing). It’s a good thing she did too since she likely ended up saving everybody when the library started sinking.
How she💮 did this was pretty incredible. When Toph realized that the building was starting to sink, she jammed her hands into the wall of the tower (which was the only visible part of the building) and basically held up an entire building, giving her friends enough time to get out before they were buried alive. Let me say that again: this 12-year-old held up a huge building that was sinking relentlessly into the ground. Dang, Toph has some serious power!
8 You Can’t Hide Anything From Her 🎀 🤡
Toph is also a master of seismic sensing. It’s actually how she’s able to get around so well despite not being able to see. Due to her earthbending abilities, she can sense movement in the ground, so she can tell where everything is. She can even sense people’ꦉs hea🐼rt rates and bodies.
Because of this, Toph can actually tell if someone is lying. She explains that when someone lies, their body changes and their heart rates are different. So even though Toph may be blind, she can easily tell if someone isn’t being truthful or not. That’s seriously scary. The only person who could fool her senses were Azula sinc💖e she cou♛ld lie with no physical reaction. I have to admit, that’s a pretty handy skill to have, especially if you’re trying to get information out of someone.
7 🙈 She Is The Law
After the 100-Year War was over, Zuko spent many years helping to rebuil💞d the world since it had quite a few scars from the war. He and Aang worked together to create Republic City, a place where all the nations could come together and work in peace. And guess who wa꧅s the Chief of Police of the city?
Yep, Toph Beifong became the head of law enforcement in this new city, and she did a pretty fine job of it. I could see her being a fantastic chie🧜f. She’s straightf🎐orward, tough, but also fair. What’s even cooler is that her daughter ends up becoming the Chief of Police after Toph retires. Both of the Beifongs are incredibly powerful and aren’t afraid to take on anything. I would not want to go up against her.
6 💖 🉐 Teacher Of Avatars
We know that the Avatar is supposedly the most powerful person on earth, especially once they’ve mastered all four elements. So, if you can take on the Avatar and come out on top, that says a lot about your skill. But the Avatar isn’t born powerful; they have to work at it and masterꦿ the elements. So I think the Avatars’ trainers are also quite amazing. And Toph has trained and helped two.
Toph trained Aang in earthbending, which was actually pretty difficult for him (though Toph’s methods of teaching were a bit rough.) She also trained Korra a bit as well, particularly when she was still recovering from Zaheer’s attack. What’s crazy is during these times, you can tell that Toph is leagues above these two Avatars. Granted, they d🍷o become very powerful, but the fact that Toph helps them and isn’t even intimidated by their strength is pretty impressive.
