"When I think Morrowind, I think of volcanoes, boats, and danger around every corner," one dev said. "I think of Vivec and Vivec City, and of the Dark Elves and all kinds of weird and wonderful and terrifying beasties," another added. 2003 saw fully realised for the first time. Arena and Daggerfall had named locations and continents which have since resurfaced, but a lot was built on procedural generation and thus lacked identity, with the cities of Skyrim, Cyrodiil, and every other continent appearing the same across all of Tamriel. Morrowind changed everything, as suddenly Vvardenfell went from another gene🤪ric swath of fields and cities with ൩only a volcano marking it, to a treacherous ashy land under siege by magma and giant mushrooms.
"The game has a trust in the player to give them agency to say 'Already, here's your name, here's your papers, you're a free person now, and then here's the world'," one dev said. "After you get to Seyda Neen and you start to get out and explore the island itself, I always liken it to a Willy Wonka moment. It's the moment where the kids go into the chocolate room for the first time, and it's creativity and imagination on display," another dev added.
There are cities wrapped up in gigantic tree trunks, wizard schools flying in the air that can only be reached by levitation, Pyramid-like structures strewn across the oce🐻an, a giant forcefield surrounding a towering volcano, and homes built into the giant mushrooms themselves.
As the devs point out in the video, Morrowind is unique. There are no other games or RPGs that look like it, and that can be seen in its bizarre architecture that flows with nature in a way so distinct from what we typically see in high fantasy with the likes of wood and high elves. Take the Silt Striders, which are how you travel to and from cities - they aren't horses as in Skyrim, they're giant bugs.
All of which ESO has brought back to life with both the Morrowind expansion and the base game, but we're going back again, this time to unearth a side of Morrowind that hasn't had a chance to flourish under the artistic direction ushered in by the 2002 game.
"With Necrom we get to dive back into Morrowind - I know the community is really excited to explore the Dark Elf cultures in new and interesting ways," one dev said. "Necrom is the City of the Dead, and that's an incredible opportunity. I'm really excited for people to see what we've done."
