How dare I even say anything bad about Skyrim?! Well, I’m going to - I love the game, but I always loved Oblivion more.
The stats and how you level up, the fantasy elements of the world, the quest design, and yes - the magic. Skyrim introduced Thu’ums, or Shouts, as a new form of power to play around with on top of the standard spells you could equip, but it all felt very basic in comparison to Oblivion, and 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Oblivion Remastered is remind😼ing me just how strong the contrast truly is.
Magic Should Be Fluent And Creative
For many of us who grew up loving fantasy, magic was always one of the most fascinating and imaginative aspeꦑcts of the genre. Possibilities were seemingly endless, as we’d watch Gandalf and Saruman battle it out, or as we’d think up the weirdest ways to use our abilities in Dungeons &💜 Dragons. Spells proved that anything was possible in the realm of fantasy, and Bethesda's Oblivion understood this philosophy perfectly.
Oblivion lets me use my spells without having to free up a hand or put away my weapon. I love you, Skyrim, but can I not just cast magic without having to ‘hold’ the spell in my hand? I get it from a gameplay perspective, as the Shouts required a dedicated button for easy use,ꦆ but putting the core magic in something of a backseat in a fantasy game didn’t sit too well with me.
But then, spells are a lot more versatile in Oblivion, too. You’ll find plenty in Skyrim, and each school of magic will unlock more interesting spells as you progress, but it still just felt like I was unlocking a new weapon or tool, or casting from the occasional scroll to summon 🀅a frost storm or an atronac🎃h. In Oblivion Remastered, I’m carrying an ungodly amount of scrolls, all of which do different things - silly abilities, apply buffs, or cast spells I don’t know myself yet - and I’m learning more interesting spells from the Mages Guild as I go. Even if you aren’t speccing yourself out as a primary magic user, there are still plenty of opportunities to experience it.
The elemen🧜ts of creativity and accessibility with magic don’t stop ther🌳e, either.
Creating Your Own Spells Is The Best Feature In The Elder Scrolls
After progressing through the Mage’s Guild questline and accessing the Arcane University, you’ll unlock the ability to create your own spells. Combine different effects, varying strengths, and name it whatever you want, ready to be cast on your adventures. Want to run ten times faster than normal across the surface of a lake? Want to jump three stories high and become invisible on the rooftops? Or maybe you just want to meticulously craft a spell that can paralyse an enemy and drain its health completely with a mere touch? I꧅t’s there for you to get crea🦩tive with, so do whatever you want.
The fact that we never got to play around with magic like this in Skyrim will remain one of my biggest disappointments with the game, and though it made plenty of strides in other areas, I hope we can see an expanded magic system give us this sort of free🍰dom in 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:The Elder Scrolls 6; especially when games like 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Baldur’s Gate 3 hav♛e further expanded the creative uses of magic to digitally simulate the freedom of D&D more than ever.
