Indeed, the Greater Will was not the first force to dominate The Lands Between. 💖Prior to that, there were the Hornsent, who become a major focus of Shadow of the Er💯dtree. In many ways, they are the catalyst for why Marika's ascent occurred, but who exactly are they, and why were they locked away?
Why Are The Hornsent In The Realm Of Shadow?
The Society Of The Hornsent
In understanding the Hornsent, that actual phrase must be dissected first. The Hornsent are not a race of people, at least strictly speaking, nor even entirely an ethnic classification. The Hornsent represent a religious order, though the people w♐ho fit within that order are indeed classed by ra🃏cial features.
As the name may imply, those with horns fit into the upper echelons of Hornsent society. Horns are a boon, a symbol of divinity, and the larger, more twisted the horn, the closer to divinity you are. This is proven further by the fact that even their currency, and Gold Horn Tender, were made from their own modified horns. To be hornless was to be marked as faithless.
The Hornsent dwell in Belurat, Tower Settlement. This is a religious city for the m🐼ost i♛mportant to the Hornsent.
Yet for a people so prevalent in the Realm of Shadow, they are nowhere to be seen in The Lands Between, at least under that name. Working under the assumption that the Realm of Shadow is a section of land shrouded from The Lands Between, we can posit why the Hornsent were removed - they were blasphemous to Marika's Golden Order.
The Birth Of Marika's Godhood
In Shadow of the Erdtree, we see Marika's home, the Shaman Village, and also learn of the extreme prejudice laid upon them by the Hornsent. They were without horns, yet had the blessing of Gold, the primordial flow of the Crucible. To the Hornsent this was a form of blasphemy, b﷽ut not one without redemption through suitable penance.
Marika's people were subjected to 'sainthood', a process through which the Hornsent would torture her people to mere pulp and take the essence of gold from within them. They used cruel tools, such as the , to enact this process before stuffing them into jars. In this way🍬, they could be redeemed, and their gold harvested. This was, understandably, upsetting to Marika. So she took matters into her own hands.
The Jars as they exist in the Realm of Shadow are completely independent of those that exist in The Lands Between.
Through means not explicitly mentioned, Marika made her way to the Divine Gateway of Enir-Ilim and communed with the Greater Will. Following this, she secreted this land away, it becoming the Realm of Shadow. Messmer's Crusade was also unleashed by her, letting her previous lords face the same torture she and her people had faced. Without the Rune of Death, this crusade would be endless. And no one would ever have to know the Hornsent ever exis꧑ted.
Did The Hornsent Persecute Others?
With a deeper awareness of how the Hornsent inadvertently led to the creation of Marika's new world order, it is worth questioning if they indeed did the same to others. Any such threats to their religious society were deemed blasphemous after all but still allowed assimilation through penance. They could rehabilitate any dissenter to strengthen their own hold. And indeed, they did as such.
The most significant of these involves Midra, the failed lord of the Frenzied Flame. Hidden 🥂away in the Abyssal Woods, he is ꦉalready deeply afflicted with the accursed flame by the time you meet him, and many Inquisitors roam the woods so deeply indulged in the madness of the flame.

The Inquisitors were at the forefront of persecution for the Hornsent, an order in which the older you were, the more you we🀅re preferred. Harbouring beliefs o🌠f the pure Hornsent past made you the perfect weapon to root out further blasphemies. Though they did not succeed in purging Midra, they did mark the Abyssal Woods as forbidden. Anyone else who entered was doomed to the Frenzied Flame anyway.
Nanaya, who was close with Midra, may well have asked him to endure the Frenzied Flame in hopes he would become the Lord Of Frenzied Flame.
Indeed, the Inquisitors have many weapons at their disposal to remove those who are impure. The weapon you can form from Midra's remembrance, the , even mentions that it was a tool of damnation. Its skill even makes mention of its similarity to the crucifixion enacted by the Golden Order, something Marika may well have sought to emulate in her own inquisitions. 🍸
This same prejudice is seen in many smaller ways across the Realm of Shadow. The Man-flies are beings born without horns that are nursed into safe death, yet their caretakers never seem to be subject to the same afflictions, an indication that the fly disease is one manufactured by the Hornsent to safely remove those born without horns. There is a simple trend - if you do not have horns, you are not worthy of the Hornsent society.
How Does Enir-Ilim Connect To The Hornsent?
When you first enter the Realm of Shadow, one of the most eye-catching things will be the giant tower obscured in shadow. This is Enir-Ilim, an extension of Belurat, Tower Settlement. While Belurat is something of a liturgical town, it serves some degree of general living. Enir-Ilim is in its entirety a place of divinity, an📖d the likely reason it was sealed away is to stop anyone else like Marika 🦋from achieving godhood.
It is implied that it is Marika herself, through the Sealing Tree, that obscured Enir-Ilim.
As you may note when examining the pillars of Enir-Ilim, they appear to be formed of calcified corpses. Though we could attempt a literal approach to this, the best way to examine it is metaphorically. Like how the Hornsent treated Marika's own people, it can be assumed they did the same with many others. Those people formed the corpses, the stolen divinity of those deemed unworthy of the Hornsent, that allowed thei༒r own s🍌ociety to reach for further divinity.
You can acquire an incantation in Enir-Ilim, , that gives a plausible reason for this theory - "The spiral is a normalized Crucible current that, one day, will form a column that stretches to the gods." The Hornsent are trying to reach the gods, spiralling Enir-Ilim ever higher in that pursuit. And those who are seemingly unworthy are the steps on that path. Even the Divine Gateway a🌺t the top of Enir-Ilim is strewn with bleached corpses. Sacrifice for the sake of greater divinity.
For the Hornsent, Enir-Ilim is a place for the sacred sacrifice of others.
Are The Hornsent Related To Other Horned Beings?
Earlier, we mentioned that the Hornsent are not strictly a singular race, but those members and practitioners of Hornsent society, primarily the praise of the spiral and horns. With that in mind then, can one who is not humanoid in appearance indeed be Hornsent?
In a sense, yes. In the Rauh Ruins, you encounter many Divine Bird Warriors. Their own armour as well as the incantation states that they are themselves modelled after the Divine Beasts that came before them. In fact, the is referred to as the 'Mother of Crucibles' by the Hornsent, held as an ancient legend as to their own origins. Not only are other horned beings Hornsent, but the current Hornsent hold them as D😼ivine Beings they must praise.
The Divine Beast you battle in Belurat is also a sacred creature to the Hornsent, and the reactions from the Hornsent Grandam are a great example of ♛this reverence.
Yet in The Lands Between, we also see horned beings, though in admittedly smaller numbers. Are they Hornsent? By definition of the Hornsent, they of course would be, but Marika has attempted to remove the Hornsent entirely from existence. This is why Horned beings are so few in the base game. Horns are accursed things here, and there are only two solutions to this - shear off the horns at birth in hopes of redemption, or bury these children away beneath Leyndell, never to be heard from again.
Morgott and Mohg are both Fell Omen, yet even this phrase is a racially charged one. By circumstances of their birth far beyond their control, they are saddled with a title that marks them as lesser despite being children of Marika. This is the power of the crucible, a power native to The Lands Between that even the Greater Will could not subjugate. In a world without the Golden Order, the Fell Omen would have been known as Hornsent and likely praised in high society.
Yet there is another notable set of horned beings in the base game - the Ancestral Followers. Found only beneath The Lan🅷ds Between around Siofra River, these primarily ethereal beings have large antlers and praise the Ancestor Spirits. Outside of tangential evidence, they would seem only lightly connected to other horned beings.
However, the offers a fascinating piece of lore. This weapon was used to reap those whose horns did not sprout buds. This is remarkably similar to the acts of the Hornsent themselves and implies a similar origin even if💦 the Ancestral Fol🌺lowers had no previous relation with the Hornsent of the land above.
How Are The Hornsent Connected To The Crucible?
Throughout this piece, we've mentioned the Crucible a few times, something that is actually mentioned very few times in regards to the Hornsent themselves. This is a slightly complicated topic as the Crucible must be taken as partially metaphorical, a leꦚgendary origin for the world that plays a key thematic role in regards to the interference of Outer Gods in The Lands Between.
In Elden Ring, the Crucible refers to the primordial energy through which all life was created. Over time, the energy that powered this crucible seems to have dried up, and Outer Gods filled in the gaps left behind by i🤡t. However, Outer Gods have not created anything in The Lands Between, only rearranged what already existed. The Erdtree is a great example of this, as the Hornsent had their own tree, and the Great Tree is mentioned in the history of The Lands Between frequently.
The arenas spread across The Lands Between are also remnants of the Crucible.
Considering the Hornsent's own praise for other horned beings, it can be assumed that the Crucible is something they are at least conceptually aware of. Horns seem to be a natural byproduct of the crucible, with many forms of life older than humanity bearing them, including the ancient dragons. Placidusax, according to the is classed as the first Elden Lord in a time before the Erdtree, implying he may have been the Champion of the Crucible.
The Hornsent also gather the sap that pours from the Scadutree (or rather, whatever tree they praised before Messmer's Crusade) in a giant chalice that one could argue is akin to a real crucible. This may be an act to gather up the primordial sap that forms the life they covet so heavily. Indeed, the Divine Gateway of Enir-Ilim ⛄looks like a giant forge from which molten sap could be poured, a🍰s does the giant building by the Scadutree Chalice.
