T🌠he first of the Nightlords you must face, Gladius is no walk in the park.

Following them, however, you are free to battle any of the remaining Nightlords in whatever order you decide. And on that journ꧃ey, Maris ia a great choice to make next. They are difficult and r🍌equire a specific build to really master, but going into this fight knowing what do do should make it a cakewalk. So let us conquer the depths of the ocean.

Maris' Strengths And Weaknesses

The expedition menu for Augur in Elden Ring Nightreign.

Maris is an interesting boss, because they are much more passive than all the others you will battle. Rather, with such command of the ocean, Maris will simply sail above you most of the battle, rather than descending to the ocean floor. From up here, they will assail you with waves and other attacks that you mostly defend against by dodging. Ranged is your only option.

In this regard, bows, crossbows, and spells become the only major method in which you can take on Maris, so come prepared. Bows, Staves, and Seals can be picked up around the map regardless of who you are playing as, so keep an eye out. Lighting is also the affinity that Maris is the weakest to, so Sacred Seals and Bows with this affinity🌳 will be your strongest weapon here.

When it comes to buffing your own defenses, you'll want to build up your resistance to ailments and affinities. Maris strikes with waves of water mostly, though these seem to be classed as Magic damage in lieu of a Water affinity, and so getting bonuses that boost your Magic resistance would be best. Maris✤ will also frequently afflict you with Sleep, typically following up with powerful moves, so boosting your resistance to Sleep and other status ailments is a winning strategy here.

Maris is very slow, but also very often out-of-reach. Though they will lower themselves every now-and-then, this is usually only for brie🐈f moments, and even then only the longest of weapons can strike them. As such, you'll need to have ranged weaponไry on you, and there are a select few characters that offer this by default.

Ironeye is an easy pick here. They come with a bow by default, and playing as him should bo🐈ost the chances of you finding even better bows, too. On top of this, his Ultimate Art can target Maris whenever, and has a very likely chance of breaking them out of their strongest moves.

Revenant is another good option here. Sacred Seals in general have many more Lightning spells, which should give Revenant many optio🐎ns when battling against Maris. Some of her summons are also quite large and have access to ranged moves, able to both handle🧸 the extra enemies that Maris summons, but also still reach Maris even when they are in the air.

Wydler and Guardian can also work here. While Wydler may be confined to the ground, their Claw Shot gives them the means to close the gap on Maris when they descend easily. Guardian can more easily reach Maris with Halberds, though their great defensive abilꩲities allows them to easily defend against Maris' attacks and revive any allies in need. They would be playing a more supportive role in this battle.

Recluse has potential at range, though the lack of access to Lightning attacks and low HP can often make her more of a hindrance. Executor can perform well here, especially w🐻ith their Ultimate Art, though they won't get much chance to use their deflection with how slow and passive Maris is otherwise.

Maris' Moveset

Maris is split into two phases, like the vast majority of bosses in the game. Like many other bosses, Maris doesn't change dramatically across phases. Rather, they gain more ꦇabilities and tend to become even more aggressive. For the most part, tactics across both phases are the same, though Maris does introduce one new move in their second phase that is fatal if ignored.

Here are all of their moves across both phases, and how to counter them:

  • Phase 1

    Attack

    Description

    Counter

    Water Wave

Maris digs their tendrils into the san🙈d and drags up a wave that cascades out🐲wards

Dodge intꦺo this wave as it approaches. It is quite wide and hard to outrun if it was initially aimed at you.

    Explosive Jellyfish

Maris will ascend and send out an army of je🌞llyfish. These will close in on you and allies, exploding ওafter a few seconds.

These jellyfish are weak, and will die in just a hi🍸t or two, preventing their explosion. They🧔 also do not move much, allowing you to outrun them. Just don't stay beside them.

    Spinning Dash

When d🅺escended, Maris will perform a spinning dash in one direction. These can be performed multiple times in𝄹 a row.

Maris will stay still a moment before doing this move, so simply move away. I꧅t is easily dodgꩲed as well.

    Sleepytime

When near the party, Maris will suddenly leap away, and then 🏅slowly descend again on their back. This attack bu🎐ilds up your sleep no matter how far away you are.

When you see Maris moving away, give chase. D꧃ealing enough stance dama🌳ge to them will cancel the attack, and open them up for a critical hit.

    Tendril Arms

When lowered to around꧒ 70% HP, Maris will ascend and summon a series of Tendril Arms around the arena. These remain until defeateไd, but cannot move.

These arms have a decent degree of HP. They can ♑🀅be avoided, but it is best to take them out with a bow or similar to thin them out and allow you some free movement.

    Tsunami

If surrounded on all sides, Maris begin spinniཧng, and then unleash a wave that knocks back allies all ꦺaround them.

If you see Maris start spinning, move away. If you have a ranged weapon, try to keep your distance t𒐪o avoid this attack acti𒉰vating.

  • Phase 2

    Attack

    Description

    Counter

    Sleep Drop

Maris will ascend high in the air, and make a glowing orb that slowly drops to the ocean floor. This puts the party to sleep and deals massive da🧸mage once it touches the ground.

Once the drop spawns, focus aꦆll your attacks on it. This will requires ranged attacks. It won't damage Maris, but it will prevent a severe attack.

    Sleep Roar

While roaming on the ocean floor, Maris will perf🔯orm a light roar periodically. This deals minimal damage and builds up Sleep slightly.

As long as your HP isn't ꦫlow and your Sleep status too high, tꦰhis isn't a move you have to worry about.

In the second phase, Maris becomes more aggressive. Their attacks hit harder🧜, and they will summon more explosive jellyfish moreও frequently. The Tendril Arms will also be constantly summoned, so only take down those that are necessary. Otherwise, every other move from Phase One remains, with the same way of countering them.

The Sleep Drop is what you must always keep an eye out for. As soon as you seeing it appear, focus all damage on it. Aside from this💜, your main form of damage against Maris will still be with ra🌞nged Lighting attacks, and in breaking them out of the Sleepytime attack.

Maris' stance can be easily broken during Sleepytime no matter how much stance damage has been dealt to them thus far, and will always o🔴pen them for a critical attack.

Tips For Beating Maris

Gaining traces of night from defeating Maris in elden ring nightreign.

Maris is fearsome when you don't have the right equipment, but simple when you come prepared. Lightning will deal the bulk of damage during the battle, though it is better to fight a war of attrition. A bow without Lightning is much better in this fight than a sword with it. Melee weapons will rarely get a chance to hit Maris, while bows will always have ဣaccess to them.

Also essential in Maris' fight is to always be on the move. Being stationary can get you hit by Tendril Arms, trapped by explosi🧔ve jellyfish, and potentially out of reach during Maris' Sleep Drop and Sleepytime attacks.

While it is important to boost your Sleep resistance, your level of resistance is irrelevant against the Sleep Drop. So if you have to make a choice between a Magic or Sleep resistance, always choose the Magic resistance.

After you beat Maris, you will unlock even more Traces of Night, as well as a unique Relic to commemorate your victory.
