These developers are the titans of the v𓆏ideo game industry.
Every now and then, though, a developer overcomes these difficulties and gets catapulted to rock star status. They prove all the naysayers wrong, become household names or indie community treasures, and have their art taken seriously. But it wasn't always fame and fortune for them. Here, we appreciate the games where the seeds of greatness were planted. These games hinted at their developers' talent before they got their big break.
8 Dangeroꦓus Dave Series
Id Software
Before Id Software shook up the PC gaming scene with shareware hits like Commander Keen, Wolfenstein, and the world-conquering Doom, a young John Romero created a game called Dangerous Dave. His goal was to showcase his GraBASIC🐼 software for Apple computers.
The game turned into a fragmented series, with the two Johns༒ - Carmack aꦆnd Romero - first uniting on a PC port to entice gamers to subscribe to their bi-monthly game disk.
By the time Dangerous Dave In The Haunted Mansion came out, Id Software had officially been born. Two years later, Doom came out. The game 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:revolutionized first-person shooters and placed Id Software squarely in the realm of game developm🐠ent i💙mmortality.
7 Snatcher
Hideo Kojima
In 1986, Hideo Kojima entered the video game industry with little support from his peers. He joined Konami because it was the only video game developer listed on the stock exchange, hoping it would bring him some respect, and often lied about his job out of embarrassment. But Kojima's outside-the-box design philosophies paid off when he directed Metal Gear, which was a success.
Wanting to further showcase his creativity, as well his love of cinema, Kojima directed Snatcher. Straddling the line between visual novel and adventure game, Snatcher drew heavily from influences such as Blade Runner and Akira to create a cyberpunk dystopia. It was another decade before Metal Gear Solid established him as one of the first video game auteurs, but Kojima's sense of style developed early.
6 🔯 Armored Core Series
FromSoftware
The creation of the Soulslike genre will always be FromSoftware's greatest achievement. Before Demon's Souls and Dark Souls gave them mainstream appeal, though, FromSoftware was already a respectable game developer. FromSoftware's biggest accomplishment until 2009 was the 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Armored Core series, 🅺which allowed it to mature as developers🐻 while delivering anime-inspired mecha goodness.

While other series like King's Field and Echo Night have yet to see a revival, Armored Core finally broke through to mainstream audiences with 2023's Fires of Rubicon. 'From the creators of Elden Ring' 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:does have a certain appeal to it.
5 Lemmings Series🌱
Rockstar North
Here's a fun, harmless prank: Show a Lemmings game to someone, watch them figure out the slow-burn solutions, and then tell them 'these developers made GTA later.'
Rockstar North developed 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Grand Theft Auto, the scariest thing politicians had seen since punk rock. Before that, they were known as DMA Design, and made a cutesy little series of puzzle games called Lemmings. Being one of the most widely ported games of all time, Lemmings is hardly obscure, but it's still the last thing to come up when someone talks about Rockstar North. Not when they have Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption in its portfolio.
4 Joe Danger 💎 ♏
Hello Games
Hello Games generated so much hype for 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:No Man's Sky that their humble beginnings are often forgott🗹en. Lead designer Sean Murray sold his house to finance the production of Joe Danger, a game where an Evil Knievel-inspired stuntman propels himself through ten brutal trials.
Joe Danger was a big risk for Hello Games, but their desire to put a smile on people's faces was fulfilled. The game was an immediate success, and received a sequel, as well as endless runner game on iOS. We're not sure if Sean Murray was able to buy his house back until No Man's Sky, though.
3 💝 Michigan: Report From ♛Hell
Grasshopper Manufacture
Grasshopper Manufacture's founder Goichi Suda has the rarest brand of fame: being known by a single name. His alias Suda51 is enough to capture gamers' attention as to what strange title he's working on next. While Killer7 and No More Heroes are largely the cause of that, Suda's zany flair manifested earlier.

Suda51 makes some of the most unique games out there. Here's how they stack up𒁃.
In 2004, Grasshoper Manufacture developed Michiꦺgan: Report From Hell. The horror game was criticised for its low interactivity, and was denied a Western release. Today, the game feels like a spiritual precursor to survival horror titles like Outlast. The pitfalls of being too avant-garde, pe⛦rhaps.
2 Yoshi
Game Freak
Before Pokemon became the millenial equivalent to Beatlemania, Satoshi Tajiri wrote and edited a fan magazine called Game Freak. The magazine evolved into a game development company when he decided that most video games weren't that good, and he had to make his own.
In 1991, he directed Yoshi, a Tetris-inspired puzzle game. It featured a lovely chiptune soundtrack, two gameplay modes (level-based and infinite) and a host of familiar Mario characters. Pokemon had already been approved for development, but it would take five more years for Game Freak to releas👍e their flagship title.
1 ♎ Honkai Impa﷽ct 3rd
Mihoyo
Mihoyo was the brainchild of three university students: Cai Haoyu, Liu Wei and Luo Yuhao. Setting up a studio in their dormitory, they created the first two Honkai games, alongside other mobile releases, while facing myriad issues. Their art designer had to hide in their rooms because he wasn't a student, and they hired players as staff to manage their servers.
By the time Honkai Impact 3rd launched in 2016, their team still consisted of only seven people. The game's success allowed the studio to expand, and by 2020 Mihoyo were ready to release its magnum opus: Genshin Impact. Its rise continued with Honkai: Star Rail and Zenless Zone Zero. Honkai Impact 3rd still receives updates and is a solid game in its own right. Good on Mihoyo for not forgetting its roots.
