Defeat your foes with the power of friendship.

Thཧe Eight Gates Formation is fairly ꧑easy to overcome once you know what to look for, but if you haven't figured out the trick or make a mistake, you'll find yourself in a lot of trouble. Here's how to claim victory at Xinye.

Battle Of Xinye Overview

the field map for the battle of xinye in dynasty warriors: origins.

While most of the Battle of Xinye is focused on solving the riddle of the Eight Gates Formation, there are a few things to keep inಌ mind:

  • You can't start attacking the Eight Gates Formation until you've taken both of the northern camps, allowing Xu Shu to observe the enemy army for weaknesses. Taking the southern road to attack directly won't work.
  • Once you start attacking the Eight Gates Formation, enemy reinforcements will start appearing in the northwest. They'll attempt to re-take the bases and eliminate Xu Shu, which will cause you to lose the battle.
    • Zhou Cang is capable of holding the western base for a long time, but not forever.
    • Bailuan will appear to stop Zhang Liao from joining the reinforcements, but his confusing mist will dissipate once the Eight Gates Formation falls.
  • When the Eight Gates Formation is destroyed, you still have to beat Xiahou Yuan before Zhang Liao can break through and defeat Xu Shu, all while protecting Liu Bei, to win the battle.
    • The good news is, destroying the Eight Gates Formation collapses the enemy's morale, so any remaining officers will be fairly easy to defeat compared to typical encounters with them.

How To Destroy The Eight Gates Formation

Xu Shu's only clue is that you need to enter the Eight Gates Formation from an entrance that differs from the others. Each of the gates looks a little different, with wooden a൲rches, decoration po🐭sitions, and other details, but there's one easy-to-spot difference that's immediately apparent once you know what to look for.

Enter the formation through the gate that does not have a torch burning. This is always the weak point of the formation, the so-called Gate of Life, Gate of View, or Gate of Opening.

If you enter at the weak point, you'll face two mid-level officers in succession; upon defeating the second one, many of the armored soldiers will flee. At that point, return to the outside of the formation and wait for a cutscene. The Eight Gates will shuffle, but all you need to do is find another entrance with no torch. Repeat the process three times to fight Jia Xu, whose defeat will cause 🐎the entire formation to colla𒅌pse.

Can You Fight The Shield Troops?

The shield troops that form the walls of the Eight Gates Formation cannot be moved, trampled, damaged, or jumped over. The only way to get past them is to defeat the officer in charge of their section.

What Happens If You Choose The Wrong Gate?

If you enter a gate with a burning torch, you can still technically destroy that section ol the formation - it will just be a lot harder. Instead of two officers, you'll have to fight three, and they'll be elite lords of Cao Cao's army such as Zhang He or Yu Jin. Picking the wrong gate will me a major strain on your items, guards, and the amount of time that Zhou Cang is able to hold the line up nor♉th.
