Naga

Naga are snake-like creatures that live forever. They were first created as immortal guardians by a humanoid species but now believe themselves to bꦺe the masters of all other creatures that inhabit their surroundings. They like to collect arcane knowledge.

Once the high priests of dark gods or sorcerers that ruled or commanded empires, Mummy lords are often sealed within their lairs. Though they have kept the memories and personality of their previous life, the mummy is almost certain to use the dark magic they were suffused with.

Szass Tam is an extraordinary lich and one of the eight Zulkirs, or, Red Wizards, who governed the country of Thay. Tam was known to have a cold and infinite patience that he cultivated in his undeath, while also possessing the ability to treat his servants well should they serve him properly. Still, Tam enjoys plotting, scheming, and intrigue, often resulting in the deaths of said servants.

At the first level, you’ll acquire a lengthy attribute that intends to serve as a buffi💛ng feature. While not particularly powerful, in the right circumstances, this can stop undead enemies in their tracks.

  • Among the Dead

    • You learn the Spare the Dying cantrip and receive advantage on any saving throws against disease.
    • Undead cannot target you specifically with a spell or attack and must make a Wisdom saving throw against your spell save DC to attempt to harm you.
    • Upon failing the save, the creature will choose a new target or give up casting at all. If they succeed on the save (or you attack them), they’re immune to this feature for 24 hours.

This feature does not work for area-of-effects spells and is, of course, completely situational to undead enemies. Be sure to ask your Dungeon Master about the prominence of the undead in any upcoming campaign ▨ಞto play this subclass feature effectively.

At sixth level, your character can help their allies or thems♕elves cheat death.

  • Defy Death

    • This is an effect that works once per long rest.

By the time you hit tenth level, you no longer need to breathe, sleep, eat, or drink water.

  • Undying Nature

  • In addition to not having to be beholden to water or food, your character will now age at a slower rate. You become immune to being magically aged (a favorite tactic for the ghost) and your body ages a single year for every ten years that go by.

This feature is ul🐲timately for flavor, as your character still has to take long and✃ short rests to regain hit points. This may be useful if you plan on taking watch during the night indefinitely.

By the time you reach fourteenth level, you gain the ability to gain back lost health.

  • Indestructible Life

  • You use a bonus action and regain hit points equal to 1d8 + your warlock level, and can reattach any severed limbs. You regain thi🦹s feature on a long or short rest.

The main draw of this feature is the regaining hit points, but the healing is ridiculously small compared to other classes at the fourteenth level. The Warlock of the Undying may need some homebrew at later levels to keep up with all the other classes in your party, but the damage you'll deal with the spells your subclass provides will be adequate.

Charisma should be your main concern, as it's both your spellcasting modifier and a contributing factor to your spell save DC. A low Charisma will make your first feature easy to be steamrolled by very weak undead creatures, so make sure it’s high for that if nothing else.

Next, focus on your Constitution, as your hit point maximum relies on your ability score there. Even with the acquisition of False Life at early levels, you should keep your Constitution high! Dexterity is next, especially with your armor class being derived it, and Wisdom should be fourth to assist your proficiency in Wisdom saving throws.

Intelligence and Strength can be your dump stats.

Half-Orc, Orc, and Hill Dwarf will add to your character’s survivability in combat, as will the Goliath’s Stone’s Endurance feature and Lizardfolk’s natural armor class. As undying warlock seeks to give your spellcasting character a facsimile of resilience, choosing a race that provides you some resistance may also be helpful.

As such, satyr’s Magic Resistance may assist you in staying upright while fighting mages and could help gear you towards a backlining build. Aasimar may also provide a useful resistance to necrotic damage, especiallওy if you’re playing an undying warlock in a necromantic setting.

Githyanki gives you access to Mage Hand, which is great, and Misty Step as you level. You'll also receive resistance to psychic damage atop the Astral Knowledge feature. It may be worth it to stock up on tho💯𝔉se resistances and skill proficiencies!

This cantrip does a small amount of necrotic damage, and may be thematic as well as useful should your spell slots run out. It also gives an undead target disadvantage on attacks against you, which will go very well with your first feature should they succeed on the saving throw you impose.

These spells are more than just tricks; they're your magical foundation.

Hex

  • Hex allows you to make an enemy creature's saving throws to be the very worst they can be by forcing them to roll with disadvantage, giving you a small boost to whatever damage-dealing cantrip or spell you cast.
  • Hex pairs extraordinarily well with your casting. You have some great class spells that will need a save, such as Blindness/Deafness, which scales really well, and Contagion, which requires three failed saves.

Protection from Evil and Good

  • You'll want this spell if you're playing a campaign in which you can expect quite a bit of undead. In fact, this goes for fey, aberration, elementals, celestials, and fiends as well. They'll have disadvantage on attack rolls against whoever you give this spell to and the target won't be able to receive the charmed or frightened condition from those creatures.
  • Since you already have a feature that imposes disadvantage on undead to hit you, this is a great spell to share with the party and is a nice, defensive option.

Armor of Agathys

Armor of Agathys will give you some temporary hit points as ꦚwell as deal some damage when it bursts. This works well with your healing abilities, pr🐎oviding you with some extra cushion in battle.
