Description

Illusion Savant

At level two, when you become a School of Illusion wizard, you only take half the required time and gold to copy an illusion spell into your spellbook.


This is standard for most schools of magic, and it is a good incenti🌞ve for you to find and copy all th💖e illusion spells that you can throughout your adventure.

Improved Minor Illusion

Also at level two, you gain the Minor Illusion cantrip for free, in addition to the three wizard cantrips꧋ you already know.


When you cast Minor Illusion, you don’t have to choose between aural and visual illusion - your illusions can produce both. This is an amazing power boost to Minor Illusion as it will make any illusions you pr✃oduce that much more complete and convincing.

Malleable Illusions

At level six, you can use your action to change the nature of any illusion you cast that lasꩲts for a minute or long🌟er. You just have to be able to see the illusion to change it.


Combined with your Improved Minor Illusion feature, this makes your illusions incredibly powerful. You can use this feature to make it seem as if your illusion reacts to the surrounding environment, even having it talk and react in real time.

Illusory Self

At level ten, you can use your reaction to make an attack roll automatically miss you by creating an illusorﷺy version of yoꦰurself for the attacker to target instead of you.


You can only use this illusory self once per short or long rest, so use it wisely. This isn’t an extremely powerful ability on its own, but combined with other illusion spells such as Mirror Image, you may be able to survive a few rounds in melee without getting hit at all.

Illusory Reality

At level 14, your illusions are so powerful that they start to become real. Each time you use an illusion spell of first level or higher, you can use your bonus action to make one inanimate object that is part of the illusion real.


The object cannot be magical, nor can it deal damage, and it only remains real for one minute. Nonetheless, this is an extremely powerful feature. This object could be anything - a stone wall, a rope, and food are all fair game⛦ for t🅰his feature.

As with any wizard, Intelligence should be your highest stat. Intelligence will determine your spellcasting modifier and set your spell save DC, so mak𒐪e this stat as high as possible.

After Intelligence, it would be good to put points into Dexterity. As an illusion wizard, there are many spells you can use to avoid getting hit, and a high Dexterity will make it even more difficult for enemies to hit you with attacks. You’ll also want to put some points in Constitution, so that yo💯u have enough hit po🐻ints to take a hit or two if need be.

For most wizards, Charisma is a dump stat, but if you are leaning into illusions then you may benefit from higher Deception or Persuasion to help sell yourꦏ illusions when you need to, both of which are Charisma scores. Charisma shouldn’t be your highest ab🐼ility score, but a passable Charisma may come in handy for you.

Strength should be your dump stat, which is standard for any wizard. You can also dump your Wisdom, since you’re automatically proficient in saving 🌼throws and you won’t need it for most chec💯ks.

A deep gnome will increase your Intelligence by 2 and your Dex꧋terity by 1, giving you a nice🀅 set of ability scores. With this species, you’ll also get 120 feet of darkvision and Stone Camouflage, which will help you hide if you’re trying to avoid enemies.

You’ll get similar ability score increases as a high elf, boosting your Intelligence by 1 and your Dexterity by 2. High elves also gain proficiency with shortbows, longbows, shortswords and longswords, which will come in handy as none of those weapons are starting proficiencies for a wizard. You’ll also get an extra Wizard cantrip, and an extra language.

You can also find success playing as a fairy. Fairies gain the spell Faerie Fire, which is a great counter to other illusions you won't find on the wizard spell list. Fairies do not have set ability score increases, which means you can distribute three points to an ability scores you see fit. As a wizard, you'll benefit greatly from having a fly speed, which will enable you to move about the battlefield and cast ranged spells without gettin🐲g into melee range.

As a first-level wizard, you’ll have🎀 access to three cantrips and two first-level spells. Starting with cantrips, here are some spell choices that work well for an illusionist.

You don’t have to bother choosing the Minor Illusion cantrip at first level – you’ll get an improved version of it for free when you choose the School Of Illusions at second level. Because Minor Illusion is the only Illusion cantrip in the game, you’ll get to experiment with other schools of magic when you’𝄹re choosing your cantrips a💧t first level.

Cantrip

Description

Fire Bolt

Fire Bolt deals 1d10 fire damage to a target within 120 feet. It can also set a flammable object on fire.


Since most illusion spells are utility spells that don’t do damage, it’s good to have a standard damage dealer when you need one. Fire Bolt is as good of a damage cantrip as any, 🌳so you’ll be glad to have this in your back pocke🐷t.

Message

With Message, you point to a creature within 120 feet and whisper a message that only they can hear, and which they can reply to. This spell can also travel around corners, and through solid object♔s.


This is a great cantrip for many reasons, especially in dealing with illusions. You may want to tell your allies when what they’re seeing or hearing isn’t real, to avoid confusion. Message is a great surreptitious communication method in that case.

Mage Hand

Mage Hand creates a floating hand within 30 feet of you that lasts for one minute. While the spell is active, you can essentially use it the way you would use your own hands, as longꦇ as the hand doesn’t attack or lift more than ten pounds.


This is another utility cantrip that you can use pretty creatively, so use your imagination if you decide to take this cant🤡rip!

For your first-level spells, you’ll have a lot more illusory options. You only getꦚ two spells, but there are plenty of amazing ones to choose from based on how you want to play.

Description

Disguise Self

Disguise Self can change your appearance, including your clothing and equipment. You can change your body shape and your height within reason, as long as you are still humanoid and the same size class. Note that this illusion won’t stand up to physical inspection, so be careful what you brush up agai💃nst while disguisﷺed.


If you choose to put points into Charisma, this spell will be especially handy for impersonating other people. If you take the Actor feat, you ca🔜n get advantage on Charisꦰma checks while you’re disguised.

Silent Image

Silent Image steps up the capabilities of your Minor Illusion. You can create an object, a creature, or another visible phenomenon that fits in a 15-foot cube. You can also use your acti꧂on to move the image around, making it appear natural.


As with all illusions, there are tons of possible uses for this spell. Make sure to think outs♍ide the box when casting this spell.

Color Spray

You cast this spell in a 15-foot cone extending from you, and all affected creatures are blinded in ascending order of hit points. Roll 6d10 and start on the creature with the lowest hit points, subtracting their hit points from the total number you can still affect for each creature in range. If a creature has the same or fewer hit points than remaining from your roll, they are blinded until the end of your next turn.


If you’re looking for illusion spells to use in combat, Color Spray is a fantastic option. This is a reliable assist to your melee allies, who will gain advantage ag༒ainst blinded enemies. 🐻It’s also a good way to make a quick escape in a pinch.

Detect Magic

Detect Magic is a concentration spell that is active for ten minutes, and will allow you to sense magic within 30 feet of you. You will also learn what school of magic you are d𝐆etecting.


This isn’t an illusion spell, but it is very useful. Especially if you suspect you aren’t the only illusionist around, Detect Magic is a great way to automatically sense other magic. Note that other spellcasters can also use this spell to detect your illusions, so be careful who you෴’re fooling!
