Speaking of deadly environments, another way to beef up your bosses is by placing hidden traps across the battleground. 🔯A cave occupied by a wererat leader might have mouse traps buried beneath the refuse covering the floor, the head of a kobold gang might have put pressure plates under a rug in his throne room that release a rolling boulder, and a covꩵen of hags might have left a potion of poison out on their alchemy table that appears to be a potion of healing.

While some traps might call for referencing your players' passive perception scores, you can also hide traps beneath materials that your players need to interact with in order to properly perceive them. For instance, there's no way to perceive a pressure plate that's hidden beneath a rug, but a high passive perception might allow a player to notice a corner of the rug is turned inward.

The battlefield that your boss fight is taking place in might change over the course of the fight.
