What Is The Shadowfell?
The Shadowfell functions as a dark reflection of the Material Plane. This means that much of the Shadowfell resembles regions within the material plane (a cathedraꦫl or forest may be in the same place or a landmark of similar proportions).
Still, there will often be marked differences in style, building materials, shape, or construction. For instance, some features may look especially neglected or overgrown, whi♈le others may be enti♔rely different from their source save for their positioning.
Mirages frequently appear within the Shadowfell. If a wizard were to Planeshift from a village to the Shadowfell, she might find herself in a similar town alongside illusory villagers she may have seen before. It is supposed to be an altogether unpleasant expe🌄rience.
Often, the plane finds itself wracked with small tremors or natural disasters, making traversal difficult for those unfamiliar with the erratic behaviors of the earth.
This makes it hard to stick to one place for long, and it could reasonably be inferred that settlements may often find themselves upended, regardless of where they are or what earthq💜uake may have occurred in the area earl♈ier.
Sporting a monochrome palette, most of the 💎Shadowfell is covered in dim lighting, with some areas of deeper shadow appearing completely black.
True light sources are scarce throughout the plane, and most fires smother themselves or put out a fraction of the warmth they may have on the Prime Mater💃ial Pla🍬ne.
In fact, heat is scarce, with a constant chill permeating the air. It's even said that one's emotions dull, becoming static after enough time within the shadows.
What Is The History Of The Shadowfell?
Long ago, Shar orchestrated the murder of the goddess Mystra by the god Cyric. This promptly threw the planes into chaos. One of these planes was called the Negative Energy Plane, a plane from which necromancers drew magic to reanimate the dead.
Shar created a confluence between the planes, dubbing this creation "the Shadowfell" after 🌄allowing magic from the Negative Energy Plane to seep into it. She e🔯stablished authority over the Shadowfell, though other deities soon claimed domains within it as well.
The existing shadow could have been considered a 𝓡perfect habitat for the darker magic, and the undead became fre⭕quent additions to the monochrome vistas.
The Raven Queen
Many spellcasters dedicate their🌞 lives to this enigmatic plane, going to extreme lengths to understand the unknown.
The Raven Queen, a deity worshiped widely in the Shadowfell, held domain over these secrets--especially those that were arcane. She occupied the aptly named Fortress of Mysteries, operating beyond any mortal's reasoning.
One such spellcaster 🀅168澳洲幸运5开奖网:w🍸as the Oerthian deity of secrets, Vecna, who longed to tap into the Raven Queen's unique ability to reap knowledge from souls as they pass💎ed inဣ and out of her domain.
Though he intended to claim her domain for his own and exact control over the Shadowfell at large, Vecna found his plans continually frustrated by her followers. This conflict still echoes throughout 🧔the domain.
Who Are The Denizens Of The Shadowfell?
While the Shadowfell is largely occupied by undead creatures and living shadows, it boasts a fairly diverse population of living creatures. The Shadowfell still has air, water, and food—despite its decay൲ing nature—so many communities and cultures have sprung up within it.
One species unique to the Shadowfell is 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:the infamous shadar-kai, a species of elf whose origins vary from 'servants of the Raven Queen before she fell' to 'fey cursed to wander and manipulate the shadows.'
Regardless of origin, these elves often fanatically serve the Raven Queen, specializing in 𒅌weapon proficiencies ⭕and darker magic.
Another unique population within the plane is that of the Shades, sharp-toothed humanoids rumored to have come about upon being merged with the magic inherent to the Shadowfell.
This is not wholly wrong, though, not entirely accurate. In truth, Shades were indeed created from a spirit or creature taking in an abundance of the Shadowfell's arcane energy through varying means but could propagate the way any other species could upon leaving the plane.
Communities like the Shadovar and dark ones also dot the landscape of the Shadowfell. Shadovar can be of any species origin, whereas dar♊k ones are their own species with 🐻a whispered language.
Other creatures, such as owlbears, wolves, and rats occupy the Shadowfell, though they often possess some degree of natural camouflage or manipulation over the shadows. Though predato♒rs primarily make up these creatures, prey is also known to exist.
Domains Of Dread
The Domains of Dread exist within the Shadowfell as demiplanes. It's said by some that if one wanders far enough through the Misty Forest, they will find themselves at the gates of Barovia, the primary Domain of Dread.
Mysterious Dark Powers exert control over the domains, using their borders as prisons for the most heinous villains (though, oddly, creatures like Vecna somehow evade this somewhat arbitrary fate), using them as a means to feed off their misery. Strangely, Shar has little influence over them.
Some of Dungeons & Dragons' most notable villains hail from these domains, with each domain centering around the "darklord" it imprisons. Though Strahd von Zarovich, the va💟mpiric count of Barovia, is the most infamous, 168澳洲幸运5开奖💦网:other mi🌊screants, such as Kas the Bloody-Handed, enemy of Vecna, or Azalin Rex, lich-king of Darkon, rule their 🅺own 🎀domains.
