I want you to imagine some core elements of 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Dungeons & Dragons. Just say the first thing that comes to mind. Dungeons, probably. Then dragons, right? After the title is out of the way, you might consider the mechanical parts, like character sheets✃ and dice, or the adventuring part, like solving riddles, meeting characters, and winning epic battles. And magic. You might think about magic. I, my esteemed gamers, did not think about magic, and it almost broke the campaign in the very first encounter.
If you've been reading TheGamer for a while, you'll have come across previous vignettes from TheGamer's adventuring soirees, like the time they 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:adopted a fire demon as a pet. We recently came to the end of that journey and have started another one, designed to be bigger and better. Less linear, more open, with quests that interlink and require backtracking, while the overall goal is powerful enough to demand constant motion, but abstract enough that they can explore in any dir🐎ection and tackle a wide variety of activities.
Magical Characters Can Upend Plans In D&D
Here's where the magic comes in. As part of the plan to make this adventure grander in scale, the party doesn't go from Level 3 to Level 14, like they did previously, but all the way from Level 1 to Level 20, assuming they can complete all of the objectives at least. And to further sell the idea they are weak little Level 1 nobodies, they started in the middle of a fight after having a bag pulled off their heads in prison. No weapons, no armour, just an array of sacks filled with imperfect gear they'd need to make work against a bear with a bear trap for a head. Or they could just cast some spells.
Out of a party of eight (already sizeable enough that it causes a rethink to how combat is designed), five of them are some form of spellcaster. While there was a scramble to the sacks out of curiosity, mostly they just used cantrips. It wasn't entirely what I had accounted for - and meant the jailbreak after combat had slightly lower stakes since many of the party didn't need weapons urgently - but it led to a different way of tackling the challenge, which is the entire philosophy of this adventure.
Also, I'm not mad. Please don't put it in the newspaper that I got mad. Though having a heavy focus on spellcasters in the party helped this time around, there are already future events like the fight with [REDACTED] where things will be much harder with a party like this. Having such a heavy focus on ranged combat (even one of the non-magical heroes has eyes on 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:being a Gunslinger Fighter) will also lead to certain ܫbenefits and pitfalls down the line.
Magic Is A Crucial Part Of Any D&D World
It's not like I forgot about magic entirely. There are several (dozen) magical characters in the adventure, specific uses for magic built in, magical rewards, and magical dungeons to explore. As my opening tirade implied, I know it's a crucial part of the game. It's just that the unarmed and unarmoured opening fit thematically and that weakness was built into the opening exchanges, but could be effectively muzzled by magic.
I could have introduced some additional convolutions for why spells and cantrips were disabled for this first clash, but the whole point is to offer open scenarios and let players run with it. Last time around things felt a little too linear, with specific outcomes required, and too firm an author's hand controlling the players' moves. This time, more free will is on the table, and that means things will play out in unexpected ways - even if I probably should have expected that some D&D players would want to have magic spells.
It also means 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:more encounters on the road, one of which Capcom already stole.
I hope that sets the tone for the whole adventure - from the players side, the scope and freedom the world gives them allows them to make a wider range of decisions and prioritise whatever they feel is important or are interested by, rather than pursuing the specific and straightforward goal they know in advance is the key to levelling up. And from my side, seeing best laid plans go awry one way or another because someone (or some five) needed to cast fire bolt instead of making d🌳o with a yklwa.
