The early hours of Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince aren't hard - but picking your sta💝rting monster roster can be.

In this guide, we're going to show you how to get started, as well as what you can expect from each of several available modes. From ranked tournaments to a neat little online shop, there's a good amount of ground to cover.

When Does Online Mode Unlock?

Rose learns about her namesake in Dragon Quest Monsters The Dark Prince.

You'll need to get your proverbial feet a bit wet before Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince's online suite can kick off in earnest. About two hours into the story (at most), Psaro will meet a certain elf named Rose after completion of the Endor Colosseum Rank G tournament. This is the first tournament in the game, and thus the easiest.

With Rose joining Psaro - whether he likes it or not! - Rosehill Tower will be constructed. Fizzy, that sas𓃲sy and fluffy lass responsible for our crash course in monster wrangling, has staked out a spot right near the entrance on the first floor. Go and have a chat with her at any point from hereon out to begin the online process.

Every Online Mode, Explained

Fizzy explains the Online Gateway in Dragon Quest Monsters The Dark Prince.

Fizzy will have five menu options for you to peruse. The simplest is Player ID, which will tell you your unique identification code for the game. There's also Nintendo eShop, which is just a quick link to the downloadable content page. The rest are worthy of at least a bit more examination, so let's dive in.

Online Battles

Ranked Battles in Dragon Quest Monsters.

You're given a trio of options within the core Online Battles mode, though these differences pertain merely to who you will fight, and how much is on the line when you do.

  • Ranked Matches involve players competing for, well, ranks. The better you perform, the higher your rank will rise, and the more challenging your opponents will be as a result. (At least, in practice; there's nothing stopping total sweepers destined for the big leagues from curbstomping you if they're new, too.) You'll earn prizes as you ascend, but the competition period resets after a certain amount of time.
  • Friend Matches let you access an in-game list of your Nintendo Switch Friends List, either hosting and inviting them to partake in non-ranked bouts against you, or joining an active host. Obviously, if a friend lacks Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince, they won't be able to see the invitation, let alone accept it.
  • Multiplayer Tournaments come in two varieties: four-player or eight-player. The Tournament Host chooses a Tournament ID that is searchable by those who wish to join. You can change the rules, change the event title, and more - or, if you're looking to join someone else's tournament, just type in that ID.

Quickfire Contest

Quickfire Contest in Dragon Quest Monsters.

When you register for a Quickfire Contest, 30 battles will take place instantly. You're not watching them play out - instead, the screen rapidly displays the results of auto-battled matches that take place via quick offscreen computations.

It's pretty interesting stuff, though you can only partake once per day. If you have a weak team (read: anything that isn't endgame material, to be honest), you're likely to rack up far more losses than wins. Even so, when we first played, we lost 28 times and won twice (ouch), but still earned several stat seed items. It's worth connecting online just to grab these items once daily.

You can even play against the opponents' teams 'for real' afterward by selecting Sparring Match. The game reads your opponent's registered data from the Quickfire Contest, allowing you to practice against the teams you didn't even encounter firsthand, to see what went wrong (or right).

Online Shop

Online Shop in Dragon Quest Monsters.

Every day, the Online Shop gets a shipment of items in. These items are added to what's already on tap, and they can include harder-to-find fare like Afficianado's Scrolls that teach skill trees to your monsters. Expect to fork over at least 8,000 gold coins for that, but it can be worth the investment as you're building your ultimate team.

There's not much else to say on this front, but we'll update if any especially rad items pop up. Thus far, we've seen Mega Medicine, Crack Afficianado's Scroll, Zam Afficianado's Scroll, and Ring of Protection. More will surely come in time.
