Despite its name, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot allows players to play as different characters from the Z saga. Piccolo, Gohan, Vegeta, and even Vegito are playable and not just for single chapters. You can pick these characters after the campaign and roam around the giant map to explore the world of Dragon Ball Z at your leisure. It’s pretty neat.
One of the less clear characters to unlock is Future Trunks. It's not all that involved, but the game doesn't simply give him to you or paint a clear picture. You'll have to travel to a certain location and talk to Bulma as Goku to even get the ability. I♓t's a little convoluted, but ultimately a simple process.
Once you finish the main campaigღn, travel to the Capsule Corporation building in West City. Outside, you'll see Bulma and Future Trunks standing near each other. They'll be in front of a time machine (the device Trunks took to arrive in this timeline). As long as you're Goku, you'll just need to speak to Bulma and Trunks will then be unlocked.
After doing this, you can swap your party leader to Trunks and unlock a brand new sidequest. Called "Lone Guardian," the w💝ay you'll start this quest is by speaking to Bulma as Future Trunks. This will require him as the party leader, but that's a simple swap in the menu to make. Once you do that, just talk to her in the courtyard and this quest should become avai❀lable. If it doesn't, you may need to clear out Bulma's other sidequests with Goku.
🍒The quest, itself, is simply to find Android 17 and then defeat him in battle. It's not much different from the other sidequests you'll undertake. It just requires you to jump through some hoops to get going. That can be annoying, but you shouldn't have any issues if you just follow this guide.
It's odd that Kakarot doesn't better guide you to unlocking Future Trunks, but at least you now know how to accomplish the task. With this information, you can set out upon the world of Kakarot and brood about how evil the future is.
