I can’t cook at all, but that doesn’t matter. I am the Dragon Age fan, so that’s the target audience that the book’s authors, Jessie Hassett and Tom Grimm, are going to have to work with here. And work with it they did, because here I am, happily taking a break from my usual frozen pizzas to eat homemade potato and leek soup - purely because they stuck the word Ferelden in froཧnt of it.

I’m telling you, it works. Dragon Age: The Official Cookbook contains more than 70 recipes, ranging from the most mundane meals to outrageous Dragon Age in-jokes. But they’re all curated to tell a story. The Official Cookbook dives into the real-life cultural inspirations for the various nations of Thedas, guiding our tastebuds through🤪 the series from start to finish. For Antiva, there’s a beautiful paella recipe. From the Anderfels, we have hearty meat-filled dishes. And for Ferelden, there are snacks that anyone from the UK will have been eating their whole life, but with some bacon shoved in the🏅re. I don’t mean that as an insult - I’m never looking back from cheese scones and (veggie) bacon.
But not every part of Dragon Age’s lore has a real-world equivalent, and this is where the fun begins. In the cookbook, we have a pie with a whole fish head sticking out, a soup made of “blood magic”, and a drink based on dragon urine. These can be found right next to the more down-to-earth meal ideas, and it’s great balance. Because of this, you can start your adventure with the cookbook as you would with any gimmick gift, and have a laugh with it. But then, you’re actua🎉lly relying on it for meal plans, and whipping up something delicious. Come for the wee, stay for the stew.
Whatever’s thrown at us, we’re guided through an in-universe description of each meal, whether it’s Unidentified Meat or Varric’s 🌳Cinnamon Rolls, letting you dine like a high lord or a lowꦇly peasant. Some of the more realistic recipes, like my ill-fated scones (see below, not the book’s fault) even come from developers of the game, a very sweet detail.
My attempts at cooking
If there’s one place where it gets a little too immersive for my liking, it’s the lack of options for vegetari⭕ans. Even as a pescatarian, I found my choices incredibly limited, and it wouldn’t have been hard to add optional instructions for how you can make some of these meals veggie-friendly. Fake meat is the obvious choice, but it would be nice to see the cookbook show a little more creativity in these instances, especially when meat-free meat alternatives aren’t always the best substitutions.
But with enough flexibility, the Dragon Age Cookbook will become a mainstay in my kitchen, both because of and despite its oddities. Whether it’s my partner and I looking for a laugh, challenging ourselves to make one of the ridiculous-looking cocktails or foul-looking pies, or because we’re eager to make ourselves something fresh and healthy for a change, there’s something here for every occasion. Even if you’re a beginner like me, there ♒are enough Dragon Age references to pull you in until you’re comfortable enough to try one of ꦑthe more serious recipes. But in the meantime, giggle away over glasses of Golden Nugs into the wee hours. The Dragon Age cookbook is there for you to take as seriously as you want, with the added bonus of being quite practical when it wants to be.
