Merlin now joins Elsa in the elite club of five carders, where just Maleficent sits alongside them and only Mr. Disney himself, Mickey Mouse, eclipses them all with eight. I love Elsa, and think you can never have too 🐬many Elsဣa cards. Show Yourself, I say to 🐲future Elsas. I’ll follo🐲w you Into The Unknown, and the haters need to Let It Go. Some Things Never Change, and I hope Elsa continues to be one of the most represented characters the game has. But is anyone all that interested in Merlin? He needs to get Lost In The Woods.
When we revealed Lorcana’s gameplay with desig♚ner ꦏRyan Miller, he stressed that every Disney character is someone’s favourite, making a point to highlight Sergeant Tibbs. So someone out there likes Merlin a lot, but with five cards to choose from, every Merlin fan can have their own and there would still be a couple left over. I’m glad Lorcana isn’t just going for the biggest headline names for brand recognition, and is instead telling a story, but as preorders for the next set remain on hold (or in some casཧes, sold out instantly), these reveals are supposed to keep excitement bubbling over. I am so sick of Merlin.

The worst part is all of these Merlins are Storyborn, so we might still be due another one to fit the Floodborn theme of the set. All of the Merlin cards have unique mechanics that (kind of) tie into each animal transformation, and even synergise with Madam Mim in some interesting ways, but that’s a slim silver lining. The rabbit lets you draw cards when bounced, and the goat charges off for lore. It’s cute. Or it would be if there weren’t so many, and th♐ey weren’t all Merl🌄in.
Disney is a big factor in my ꧅interest꧃ in Disney Lorcana. Across my various decks I’ve tried out a lot of characters I’m not a major fan of, and have branched out from building entirely around Elsa, so I know there’s value in a broad range. But on the collecting side, I still mostly just want my favourite characters. That means more Elsa and way, way less Merlin.
