That said, it is s🦩till a little while until you can find any capable of being repaired and there's plenty of little bits of information that's important to keep in mind about them. Here's everything you need to know.

What Do Roads Do?

Roads, as you might expect, are for driving on. You can run on them, though you can easily run anywhere. Roads make it incredibly easy for vehicles to travel across Australia though, unlike on the more rugged terrain elsewhere. That said, they only exist in Australia. With Mexico serving as more of a tutorial area, it is devoid of any roads you can repair. You'll have to keep relying on ꦫthe more manual, physically trodden paths.

Once a road has been repaired, it follows a set path. You can't choose where a road goes, or where it begins and ends. You are restoring old roads after all, not making new ones. As such, they tend to connect up all the major areas around the country, such as the cities and distribution centers. How To Repair Roads

Repairing roads is a nice and simple process, though it can technically work a little differently depending on whether or not the section of road you are repairing is within the Chiral Network. To repair a road, you must first find its auto-paver. These are scattered across the entir🥀ety of Australia in pre♉-set locations. Once you find your first one, the rest are much easier. Just follow where the road trails off until you find the next one.

Once an auto-paver has been found, it stays marked on the map permanently.

Once you find an auto-paver, all you have to do is approach it and deposit materials inside. This will always be varying amounts of Chiral Crystals, Metals, and Ceramics. Once it has all the required materials, the auto-paver will restore the road straight away. After just a few seconds, the entire road will be created and will connect up with any other nearby pieces as well.

However, be careful before you begin repairing a road. Any structures in the path of where the road will be constructed will be automatically dismantled, and the items inside it lost to you. You will get some likes as compensation, though th﷽at is all. So make sure there's nothing in the way first. If you do try tౠo build something where a road would appear, it will be marked in orange as a warning.

Now, as to how this relates to the Chiral Network. Auto-pavers operate locally, meaning they don't actually need to be in the Chiral Network to be used. That means you could technically build roads across the entirety of Australia before you've connected any o꧅f it to the Chiral Network, though 🦹it would be incredibly expensive.

If you instead wait to deposit materials until the auto-paver is inside the Chiral Network, other players will also be able to contribute materials to the road restoration process as well. This helps🐠 you save on supplies immensely, and means a road may even be built in your world without your help entirely. So take your time and only build roads as you need them because they might just be finished by time you reach them.

Do You Need To Maintain Roads?

The short answer is technically yes, but functionally no. Like every structure in Death Stranding 2, it degrades over time from use, environmental disasters, or Timefall. While tens of people may be using a single instance of road and wearing it down, it only takes the efforts of a single person to repair it with a few hundred Chiral Crystals. Regardless, roads degrade incredibly slowly, so it's not really ever an issue you have to worry about, especially if repair materials are being consistently deposited by just a player or two.

Are Roads Or Monorails Better?

Roads are a returning feature from the original Death Stranding, and a welcome one at that. However, a brand-new form of transport is introduced in the sequel, one that is much faster than roads, though also more restricted in some regards - monorails.

Like in reality, monorails follow a set path and bring you to a specific destination. While roads too follow a set path in the game, they offer you the freedom to turn off the road at anytime and go in any direction your heart desires. Monorails do not offer this, and you must instead stay strictly to its predetermined path between st♓ation𓆏s.

That said, you can ride monorails in two different ways. If you want to transport cargo and vehicles, you can choose to climb aboard yourself from any of the st﷽ation endpoints. You can jump off yourself at any point along the path, though your vehicle and cargo will still continue on to the final destination. This, while faster than roads, inherently leaves you at a disadvantage if you're trying to get somewhere between stationsꦆ.

You can also climb onto a monorail while out in the world by finding any of the repaired sections and connecting to it like a zipline. This 🐽lets you jump between repaired sections incredibly quickly, though you are not allowed to drop off at all during this unless you are incredibly close to the ground, making it even more restrictive.

So in short, roads are slower and require a vehicle to really capitalise on the speed of but give you the freedom to change direction at any time., while monorails tend to be much faster, but more restricted in terms of the areas they can bring you.
