Natural disasters are not events you can ignore, and they help to make even the most well-trodden paths become a bit more unpredic🅰table. Learning how they occur and what they affect is the best method of surmounting them since you do not have the means of preventing them entirely.

How Do Natural Disasters Occur?

Natural disasters are, as the name implies, natural. They are not something Sam or anyone else in the game has control over. They occur constantly throughout the game, mostly randomly outside of some preset enꦡcounters. This means you caꦕn't fully plan around them, and have to adapt on the fly.

However, you can still be prepared to a degree. Plate Quakes, for example, are most devastating when you are holding a very highly-stacked backpack, so try to have a vehicle or Floating Carrier at the ready to spread out the load more evenly. Always bring some Container Repair Spray for Timefall, or Lad🎀ders and Climbing Anchors in the event of flooding.

However, while storms and quakes are mostly random, flooding tends to occur as a direct result of other events. For exam🦹ple, after a particularly heavily period of Timefall, rivers may flood. Thi♊s happens regionally based on where and when the Timefall occurred. As such, checking the weather forecast can give you a rough idea of where flooding may occur next.

Plate Quakes also tend to cause rivers to flood. Since there are very few ways of predicting a quake, you cannot quite plan for the rivers that will flood as a result of them, either. As such, that is why it is smartest to always come prepared to the best of your ability.

Every Type of Natural Disaster

There are a few different natural disasters present in the game. While the list of them is relatively small, they offer a great degree of diversity based on where they occur and the strength of the natural disaster ✨itself.

Natural Disaster

What It Does

Plate Quakes

C🃏ause shaking that can knock small over, dislodge boulders from cliffs, erupt tar currenꦆts, and cause avalanches.

Flooding

Causes rivers to widen, and other low-land areas to be𝓰come flooded. Also causes ღsurrounding land to become slippery, even after flooding stops.

Wildfires

Causes continual, spreading fires in wooded areas, and also has flaming comets 💦drop from the sky⛎.

Storms

This can be a variety of storms, such as sandstorms, electric storms,🍌 or blizzards. These reduce visibility, push Sam in the direction of the wind, and can wear down cargo faster and trigger lightning boltꦿs to strike the ground.

Storms, for example, can take on different elements deღpending on the environment, while Plate Quakes will affect the area differently based on their surroundings.

How To Survive Every Natural Disaster

Each type of natural disaster in the game is quite distinct from one another. Here are the⛦ best methods to manage ea💝ch of them.

Quakes

You will typically get a brief warning in advance of a Plate Quake. These have diverse effects depending on where they occur and their strength. Plate Quakes have a unique scale, Q-Ranks, that determine their strength. Th🅠e higher the number, the str𝐆onger the Plate Quake.

Plate Quakes also damage any structures within their range. There is no way of protecting against this, so it is a cost that must b📖e paid.

They are shown with an epicentre on the map to indicate where they occur, with the worst effects at the very centre. If you are on flat land, Plate Quakes are relatively harmless. They can shake Sam and he will have to stand still while centering to keep his balance, but you are otherwise safe if you are in a vehicle, with Pickup Off-R🦹oader✅s offering the most protection.

When near hills and mountains, Plate Quakes are more dangerous as they can dislodge boulders which can deal devastating damage to both Sam and his cargo. Take your time in these scenarios, and don't be afraid to just wait out the Plate Qඣuake rather than rushing ahead.

It is in snowy mountains that they are most dangeorus. Avalanches sweep down mountains, getting stronger the further 🃏they proceed. The best thing you can do here is simply to avoid them, and try not to get caught on uneven ground where an avalanche could easily whisk you away.

Floods

Floods are easily the most common of the natural disasters that o🎐ccur, and this is mostly because other natural disasters can trigger them. When flooding occurs, any existing rivers become much wider, making existing ladders and bridges less effective.

However, flooding can also cause areas that typically have no water to fill up, making low l﷽and you could previously traverse on foot suddenly much moꦇre difficult to navigate. The land in general also gets wetter, making it much easier for Sam to lose his footing.

With the right APAS upgrade, you can be warned of where flooding will occur when building structures to avoid them being unnecessarily damaged.

When flooding is about to occur, you will be warned of it on the map with the river in question highlighted in orange. This will also show any other waterless areas that will become filled as a result of the flooding. Keep this in mind 🅺when planning your deliveries and bring the appropriate tools and equipment to surpass it.

Also of note is that rivers flood gradually, not all at once. If a flooding has only just begun💯, you may be able to complete your delivery before it reaches its worst state. The opposite is also true, with flooding gradually reducing over time until it settles on its natural state.

The best way to manage flooding is to avoid those bodies of water as much as possible, as flooded rivers are much choppier as well, draining your stamina and dragging Sam more powerfully than normal rivers. However, a Climbing Anchor is helpful to stop you getting washed away ♓if a 🔥ladder isn't enough to bridge the gap.

Wildfires

Wildfires are the rarest of the natural disasters, but also one of the most difficult to manage. They only occur in dense wooded areas, which are rare enough in g🔯eneral across Australia. They also result in 'Chiral Comets', which are basically meteors that rapidly assault the a🐬rea, causing fire to spread even faster.

Wildfires are incredibly difficult to manage because wooded areas offer less freedom to move, while also giving fire the ideal means of expanding. The fire is incredibly damaging to Sam, and there are functionally no limits to where and how it can spread. If you are not fas🌼t en𓆏ough, the fire will consume you.

This means you cannot wait it out. If you are caught in a wildfire, you must immediately plan an exit route. Do not try to pick up more cargo as it is entirely possible you will get trapped by the ♑expanding flames.

Vehicles also struggle against fire,ඣ with Sam imm🥂ediately jumping off if they are left in fire for more than a second or two.

Tar Cannons are the most effective means of putting out fires, especially when planted into🍃 the ground. However, even this should only be done when flames are blocking your path or a necessary piece of cargo. It is almostꦓ always better to run away from a wildfire than try to put it out. It will expand faster than you can extinguish

Storms

Sam stands before the plate gate from Mexico to Australia in Death Stranding 2.

Storms are one of the more varied natural disasters as they can take on many different forms. The primary ones you will encounter are sandstorms, lightning storms, and blizzards. All 🌱of them are accompanied by strong winds, though each has its own unique aspects as well.

Sandstorms are the earliest you will encounter. They possess incredibly strong winds that push Sam in their ꦯdirection, though taking cover behind large buildings will save you from the worst of this. However, visibility will still be dramatically reduced by the sand itself, making it much more effective to rely on markers to navigate over your own eyes.

Lightning storms will be the most common you see, typically occurring during moments of heavy Timefall. They come with strong winds, though not as intense as sandstorms, nor do they reduce your visibility anywhere near as much. However, they also feature periodical lightning strikes which have the potential to hit Sam. Therefore, resting under a Timefall Shelter or keeping on the move are the safest bets. Don't stay still without any coverꦆ to protect you.

Finally, we have blizzards. These are most akin to sandstorms, dramatically reducing visibility and featuring very powerful winds. However, they are also heavily composed of snowy Timefall. This makes the weather conditions more rapidly deteriorate your cargo, so try to find shelter as oꦦften as possible if you ar🎃e caught out in the mountains.
