Summary

  • We already have games for Deadpool and Wolverine
  • But if you haven't played them, you might have already missed out
  • No digital versions exist, and preowned prices have been jacked up because of this

There isn't much more for me to say beyond what I've already said about Deadpool & Wolverine, which is chiefly that there's nothing to say. The empty slew of cameos and references might be enjoyable enough in the moment, but it doesn't really do anything for either character, their place in the MCU, or tell a story that matters to anyone beyond Channing Tatum who finally got t♚o do a terrible Cajun accent.

However, it does bring its two title characters back into the spotlight. If the MCU wants to restart the Mutant arc and bring in a new 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Wolverine, that might prove to be a mistake, but in the meantime, a somewhat earnest (it is Deadpool, after all) farewell to the FoX-Men universe is well deserved, despite some missteps here or there. A lot of people have been looking ahead after the movie, asking to erase its one meaningful contribution (Gambit's ending) by giving us a real Tatum-led Gambit movie, or giving us an open world Deadpool game - another bad idea.

Deadpool & Wolverine as Proved Immune To Superhero Fatigue

Deadpool & Wolverine looked surprised in Deadpool & Wolverine

Were it not for 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:the upꦍcoming Wolverine game from Insomniac, there would undoubtedly be 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:huge demand for one. Given 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Insomniac has gotten itself 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:trapped in the Marvel machine, it's likely the studio most fans would have picked as well. But if we are to find a message in Deadpool & Wolverine, and you do have to squint to see it, perhaps it is about appreciating the past. Yes, it's a little hackneyed that we get a succession of forgotten heroes, but it does treat them as real characters with suitable reverence. Many go out in a blaze of glory.

Ryan Reynolds' continued criticism of Green Lantern undercuts this, and feels pretty empty when it's not even in his top five worst movies, and people will try to tell you it diminishes Logan despite it avoiding a retcon of that story, building on the trauma and development for X-23, and the fact nobody stays dead in comics except Uncle Ben.

That's why it has me reflecting on the respective games Deadpool and Wolverine have already given us. While both have appeared in various Marvel compilation games before, it's their starring roles that are most interesting. Wolverine had the criminally underratꦏed X-Men Origins: Wolverine, a game 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:far better than its movie (which features Ryan Reynolds' first turn as Deadpool), and extremely brutal in its violence.

Deadpool & Wolverine's 360 Era Games Are Hidden Gems - Too Hidden

While it was a decent action game at heart, the fact it not only tapped so well into the movie's version of Wolverine but added the sort of violence usually only seen in the comics - like pulling a pilot out of a helicopter and decapitating him with his own propellor blades - to elevate the carnage. Though very of its time in some ways, when you look at the unbridled violence of Deadpool & Wolverine, it feels instead like movies have finally caught up to how bloodthirsty Wolverine can be.

Then there's the 2013 Deadpool game. It predates the movies, so is made out of affection for the character rather than to tie into anything. It's still a Marvel superhero, so that's obviously part of it, but there's a lot more freedom. As a result, the game can feel a little open ended, and probably too inspired by Duke Nukem than it needed to be, but it's vintage Deadpool humour without Ryan Reynolds reminding you that he knows famous people. What more could you want?

There is a major issue though if you want to follow this nostalgia through to its logical end. The licensing on both of these games has expired, and so they cannot be downloaded digitally. After a quick look online, X-Men Origins: Wolverine goes for around £25 online for a physical pre-owned copy, while Deadpool starts north of £30, which quickly becomes £40-50 or higher if you want the Xbox One/PS4 version. These are old, forgotten games only expensive due to a scarcity caused🦩 by red tape and small print.

That means for most fans, it's impossible to experience these games. They're not must-play gems that will leave your gaming life incomplete until you tick them off the list, but they are exactly what a lot of people are asking for right now, and a pretty good version of those educated wishes too. It's another reminder that gaming places far too many barriers in its own way, and if you're looking for the Deadpool or Wolverine game, I hope you find a charity shop near you that doesn't realise how much it could gouge for them.
