The timing's perfect, with Final Fantasy 7 Remake in the rearview and Rebirth still ahead. And while the bite-sized missions might feel a bit strange on non-PSP hardware, the fun still shines through.

Whether you're returning to Zack's endearing tale or, as we wager will be the case for many, new to it entirely, we're assembling this walkthrough, so you can prepare for everything that stands in our hero's way. Let's mosey!

Prologue: Midgar Assault

Crisis Core FF7 Reunion Prologue

For those of you who have played Crisis Core's original version on PSP, you may recall that this section was its own chapter. The developers shook things up a bit by adding it to Chapter One, which was originally Chapter Two. This makes sense — not only is this part quite short, but its altered placement means there are an even ten chapters in Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunion, rather than the arguably awkward 11.

Enjoy the opening cutscene and then get to work. The initial scuffle is practically impossible to lose against, especially with the buffed-up Materia you'll temporarily enjoy here. If you accidentally blitz past one of the numerous tutorial windows that'll spring up along the way, take solace in the fact that tutorials will reappear in your mail (email) section of the main menu later.

Crisis Core FF7 Reunion Behemoth

The Behemoth puts up a much more significant fight before going down, even if it's still somewhat of a cinch, so don't be afraid to use healing items if necessary. Curiously, while it's easily possible to win using conventional tactics like Materia spam and hit-and-run physical attacks, we found that running in circles right next to the Behemoth, attacking a couple of times on every side of it before continuing apace, prevented it from ever hitting Zack.

Getting Your Bearings

Crisis Core FF7 Reunion Zack Simulation

Welcome to one of the main floors of the Shinra Building. You'll be spending a great deal of time here throughout the game, though it won't be long before a few more floors open up, as well as an explorable Midgar Sector 8 and more. Just follow along with the easy plot prompts. Soon, with Zack briefed on the Genesis situation, it will be off to Wutai.

Introductions to major aspects of Crisis Core Reunion will include getting acquainted with missions. Missions form the bulk of the gameplay, with 300 in all, gradually unlocked through various means. For now, there's just the one. You'll also be inundated with further tutorials; read them all and then let Kunsel know you've done so.

Fort Tamblin (Forest)

Crisis Core FF7 Reunion Fort Tamblin Outside

Much of Crisis Core: FF7's level design is linear, so we won't be spending a lot of time mulling over your various paths in this walkthrough. One thing to note is that you can typically tell when a battle is about to commence because your linear path temporarily widens to accommodate combat mechanics. Keep that thought in mind, and you should quickly see what we're talking about.

If you leave such areas and then return, battles will occur again anew. They're not always against the same foes, though the range is slim, and at this point in the game they will be static. Feel free to take advantage of this fact to further familiarize yourself with fighting 101. Practice dodging and blocking, as your enemies in the forest don't hit hard at all.

Fort Tamblin (Interior)

Crisis Core FF7 Reunion Foulander

Once you've reached the gates of Fort Tamblin, Zack will be forced into a battle against a series of respawning Wutai troops. The gunners can quickly begin to frustrate you with their shots, as they'll force Zack to stop while he's taking damage. As such, hug the wall and let the troops come to you, where the gunners will have a tougher time tracking.

Fort Tamblin's an interesting place; you'll have a running counter of battles that need to be won before you can progress, which will pop up in the top-left corner of the screen after Lazard gives Zack a ring. There aren't any random encounters here, but you have to poke around to find all the scripted ones.

Unlike most fights, the enemies in many of the scripted encounters will have Zack at least partially surrounded at the start. If you're facing nothing but humans, it won't matter which direction you push Zack through, but if your enemies include either the four-legged creatures called Foulanders or the Wutai troops designated as Sergeants, they're tougher stock. We recommend taking down one humanoid to get out of their range and then closing in for the kill.

Crisis Core FF7 Reunion Limit Break One

The game makes it pretty clear, but just in case — eventually, some of the scripted encounters will involve interacting with hidden (though rather obvious...) walls.🍨 As for the towers, interact with them at the bottom, which ꦺprompts the Wutai Sergeants up top to jump down and challenge you.

Eventually, Director Lazard gives Zack another call. Although it's possible to have completed every encounter by now, most of the time, you'll still have a couple of stragglers when you reach the fort's inner gate. You can go on ahead, ignoring them, but retrace your steps and finish the job. You get a better 𓄧appraisal later if you do♛, which leads to better rewards as well.

If you're poking around the menus wondering where the game lists Zack's Experience Points and amount required to level up, no, you aren't missing anything. This information is hidden.

Experience Points do exist, and they will dictate the timing for a level-up, so don't worry about 'random' encounters being pointless. But the game keeps it under wraps, probably to give the DMW's signifier (landing on '777' to raise Zack's level) a more authentic feeling.

Crisis Core FF7 Reunion Fort Tamblin Yuffie

Good to see you, Yuffie. Anyway, one side of the courtyard has a Hi-Potion, but the other has Earrings, which raise Zack's Magic stat by five. This early in the game, that's not bad, so be sure to snag them. Note that, contrary to the previous section, random encounters have returned. There's not much point in engaging with more than necessary.

This applies for most of Crisis Core, so it's good to get in the habit of using it whenever you'd like. You can circumvent many random encounters by hugging the walls instead of stepping into the widened areas that designate fight zones. If you're finding the Foulanders and Sergeants a bit rough, definitely take advantage of this, though you'll still need to fight a few of the latter.

Boss Fight: Vajradhara Wu and Vajradhara Tai

Crisis Core FF7 Reunion Vajrahada Boss

We wouldn't say these two are all bark, but their bite isn't quite as bad as it initially appears. The thing about the Vajradhara duo is that they're entirely forward-focused. So long as you're constantly barreling around them with a good blend of dodging and normal sprinting, they can never lay a blade on Zack.

Except, that is, when their Limit Break pops up. Try to lower the damage somewhat by attacking during their cast time, but pull back after a few hits and opt to block instead. You'll lower the pain through both means, but especially the latter, so don't get 'greedy' and continue thwacking until it lands.

While it's impossible to know how long the cast time is your first time facing against it, it never changes thereafter, even when one dies and the other uses a different Limit Break on its own. Our other advice is to try going after one rather than both, but don't fret if you accidentally strike the wrong one sometimes. It'll happen. Locking on will help.

Crisis Core FF7 Reunion Angeal Sword Joke

If you cleared out every scripted encounter inside the fort earlier, you'll now receive the best possible reward: a Fire Armlet. Equip this to Zack immediately, and have Blizzard Materia equipped as well. We also suggest unequipping Fire Materia so that you don't find yourself accidentally casting it against the next boss.

Follow along with the following cutscenes, dispatching the mysterious G Assassins and saving your progress before heading forward thro♏ugh the forest.

Boss Fight: Ifrit

Crisis Core FF7 Reunion Ifrit Arrival

With nearly 7,000 HP, Ifrit is going to take a while. All his regular attacks can be avoided by maintaining your distance, though, leaving his Limit Break as the exception. Hellfire, the Limit Break, hits pretty hard, so block and have your item bar hovering over a healing item.

If you haven't figured it out already, our warning in the previous segment of the guide comes courtesy of Ifrit's strengths and weaknesses. Ifrit is weak to Ice and absorbs Fire, hence why you shouldn't have Fire mapped to your Materia button layout. Spam Blizzard whenever you find yourself far enough away from Ifrit to get a shot in.

With the Fire Armlet equipped, it will halve Fire-elemental damage of all sorts, which prevents the flame-shooting attack from hurting much if you do get hit by it. Halving Hellfire's damage is also fantastic, though still anticipate it putting Zack's HP low enough to advise some quick healing to be safe.

Angeal is gone, which is sad. Zack is sad, which is also sad. But you've completed the first chapter of Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunion. Which is rad!
