Why Should You Conquer?

Although Sid Meier's Civilization 6 offers several paths to victory, the conquest of rival cities remains a crucial part of a civilization's evolution to♍ ensure territorial expansion and your civ's overall growth and prosperity.

In fact, methodically conquering each opposing civ's territory is a goodﷺ way to run them out of the game altogether (on the lower difficulties at least) or stunt their societal growth so severely you'll achieve the conditions for every other type of🅺 victory by default.

What Counts As Conquering?

The German city Aachen being raided by barbarians in Civilization 6

Conquering cities in Sid Meier's Civilization 6 can be such a 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:pivotal maneuver, but how do you accomplish such a feat? For starters, militant units are only able to traverse into a rival's territory when civs are at war with one another, either by declaring war on the o🎉ther themselves or having their opponent target them in a declaration of war.

Once a formal war is declared both armies are free to cross borders at will. War in Civ 6 holds a "Capture the Flag" sort of objective; conquer en෴emy cities, whilst defending your home turf.

In order to capture a city in Civ 6, you must first lay siege to the city center (the tile on which a Se🌟ttler initially established the city) to formally occupy the territory. This breaks down into fairly simple phases: storming the city, laying siege to the city walls, and occupying the city center.

Scout The Area Ahead Of Time

A coastal city with districts in Civilization 6

Before charging into a city, it's important to kn🐠ow what lies ahead. By sendin🗹g a scout, you can get a sense of how fortified the city is, and prepare accordingly.

Several factors determine a defending city's strength. Its base stre꧙ngth is equivalent to that of the civilization's strongest melee, while these other factors will determine how robust those defenses will grow.

  • Capital cities (the first city established by a civ) have an innately higher defense than other cities in a civ.
  • Cities erected on a hilltop offer additional defense value.
  • Specialty districts also contribute to a city's overall defense, making Districts vital targets for efficiently depleting a city's health. You can target Districts in one of two ways:
    • Encampments benefit from the city's walls, and can offer an additional ranged attack to the defenders. You'll need to break through the defenses and seize the Encampment for yourself to stop the bombardment.
    • Other Specialty Districts provide Science, Faith, Gold, or Culture when Pillaged. Even if you can't take a city, you can still benefit from raiding!

The map's geography aside, perhaps the biggest hurdle in breaching a city's defenses has become laying siege to its walls. This preliminary line of security has been reinforced in Civ 6 compared to previous installations of the Civilization 🔯series.

Training The Right Units For The Job

Civ 6 Archers By The Ocean

Since the fortification of city walls in Civilization 6, the use of siege machinery has become imperative. Walls offer defending cities built-in ranged damage, which can steadily thin out conquering troops. Unless you have late-game support like Medics, the best way to counter this damage is to Pillage nearby Farms, which restore the Pillaging unit's health.

In the early eras o✃f Civ 6, conquering armies will utilize Battering Rams and Siege Towers to breach city walls.

Battering Rams shatter a city's wall defenses by letting friendly units deal additional damage to ܫwalls.

Conquerers will need to advance their siege technology before attempting to breach the walls of cities in later eras. Siege Towers allow melee troops to surpass the wall defenses and get a head start on depleting the city's ▨health.

Siege equipment alone will not conquer a city. You'll need to comprise a balanced militant force of close꧒-combat and long-range units to lead the charge. In the table below, you can check out some recommended units to conquer a city.

Unit

Why Use?

Light and Heavy Cavalry

These units hit harder than foot soldiers, and their increased movement allows them to swe💧ep across a continent more efficiently.

Greek Hoplite

You can bolster each unit's strength by maneuvering them in pairs to gain their unit adjacenc🀅y bonus.

Japanese Samurai

These are heavy hitters that can make quick work of city defenses given proper backup from the right suppꦛort units.

Ranged Units

Steadily chip away at a city's health from 🦩a distance while avoiding enem𒆙y counters.

Naval Ranged Units

These ranged vessels are great🔯 for capturing coastal🅘 cities.

Siege Units

Siege units are designed specifically to quickly wear down city walls; just be sure to defend them witღh foot soldiers!

You can also increase the effectiveness of a specific unit in siege warfare by awarding them certain Promotions for their previous victories. B🧔ut remember, without Siege and Support units, the attacking army will likely perish before they can breach a well-fortified city's outer defenses.

What Are Urban Defenses?

sending envoys to city-states

When a Civilization discovers Steel, all of their cities gain Urban Defenses. These are the highest tier of Walls in the game, and are automatically constr🌸ucted upon researching Steel. Any future cities founded or conquered afterward will also gain Urban Defenses.

Urban Defenses override any existing Walls when the city is in combat, but Walls can still generate Tourism once you discover Conservation.

Urban Defenses can be worn down like any other Wall, but you'll need powerful Siege units like Artillery, alongside some naval bombardment and Bomber-class aircraft to be able to make a dent.

Strategic Positioning Around The City

paris burning in siege

Now that you have the right unit▨s, l🥀et's go over the positioning for your siege.

Move in with siege equipment first, then close-range units on the first circle of tiles surrounding the city center. Have Ranged units ready to move in behind the siege equipment one tile out from the city center. If you have access to aircraft, clear the skies with Fighters before sending in your Bom🌸bersꩵ to damage the city's defenses.

You should always try to position your Melee, Anti-Cavalry, and mounted units so that all six of the tiles adjacent to the city center are in your Zone of Control. This places the Besieged status on the city, which prevents wall repairs and 🔴stops the city's main health bar from rege🧔nerating each turn.

Your units will likely need to heal at some point mid-siege, so be ready to either Pillage nearb꧋y Farms or rotate in fresh troops to keep the siege's momentum going. Always bring more troops than you think you'll need!

units positioned around a city for siege

Despite the advantage, fledgling armies especially should keep to the tactic of methodic advancement from city to city, swarming🍃 one city center at a time. That is unti♔l you have built up a large enough militant force to lay siege to multiple cities simultaneously.

Keep in mind you'll also need to guard the home front, as such aggressive tacti𒊎cs are sure to make en🍷emies of your neighboring civ leaders.

Levying City-States

levying a city state's military for battle

City-states you are a Suzerain of will often go to war for you whether you levy their military or not. However, you must levy them in order to have direct control over the units. This is done by paying a lump sum of money but w🐻ill give you access to all military units.

If an unlevied city-state unit destroys a rival city center without units from your civ aiding in the battle, the rival territory will simply be wiped from the map and you will not be able to claim the land as your own without first resettling the area. If yꦚou want to avoid this, try bꦛecoming friendly with city-states so you can levy their military.

Conquering The City

Conquered Rome Civ 6 how to capture a city

Once through the city walls, the core objective is t♒o cont𝓰inue depleting the city's health and maneuver troops to the city's core.

A city isn't conquered until its health is reduced to zero by a Melee, Naval Melee, Anti-Cavalry, Light Cavalry, or Heavy Cavalry unit.

Ranged, Naval Ranged, and Siege units can't conquer a city o𝐆n their own; their attacks will only ever reduce a city's health to one.

Once formally occupied by one of your units, the city borders will take on your civ's national colors, and you'll be presented with the option to either keep or raze the city. Razing will dissolve the city borders and demolish all buildings within the territory while claiming the city as your own maintains the border and all tiles ღwithin fall under♕ your domain.

As civilizations advance through the ages, siege equipment evolves, and new armaments are invented for both defense and offense. But despite technological advancements, conquering tactics remain the same: Build a large and well-balanced army, breach the city walls and occupy the city center.

What Happens If Your City Is Conquered?

civilization 6 macedon defeated

Other civs can conquer your cities as well, but this is less than ideal. For the most part, you can combat this if you have a strong military.

If an enemy civ succeeds in conquering your city, it will become theirs. You can go to war again to re-conquer it but keep in mind that this can be risky, especially if you have just wrapped up the previous war.

Overall, losing one city is not the end of the game, but once all your cities have been conquered, you cannot keep playing and you effectively lose. To prevent the conquering of your own cities, be sure to have strong defenses and a strong military. Additionally, we recommend keeping your cities relatively close to each other.
