Another mechanism that makes Breath of the Wild feel like a survival game is the presence of your stamina meter. In many adventure games, you can climb or swim forever, but in Breath of the Wild, you only have limited endu🐼rance, so you need to b🌌e careful how you travel.
You also have to be aware of temperature, since being either too hot or too cold can kill you. Many environments exist at 🌠either extreme, forcing you to put precedence on immediate survival over your long-term quest.

While these effects definitely have the character of survival game mechanisms, they just don't have the same weight as they would in a survival game. Sure, it might be dangerous to be caught without a fire, but if you can carry unlimited flint and wood, why𒐪 would you ever let that happen.
Plus, you can keep all th♚e different armor and outfits so you can easily switch to the most appropriate gear for your c♔urrent conditions.
6 ไ It Is: Weapons Wear Out
Weapon durability is another common mechanism that survival games use to keep you from getting too comfortable. When your pickaxe wears out in , you have to construct ꦕa new one from the materials you have, and if you ♐don't have any more of a limited resource, such as diamond, you might have to downgrade.
You face a similar problem in Breath of the Wild. All weapons will wear out, sometimes failing when you need them most.꧋ And sometimes that can put you in a very bad way.
5 It's Not: There's No Weapon Crafting 📖
As we mentioned, when your pickaxe breaks in Minecraft, you have to craft a new one. However, when a weapon breaks in Breath of the Wild, you can't simply craft a new one.
You can't actually craft one at all. Sure, you can collect materials and take them to someone else who crafts a weapon, but that's not the same thing. This is one of the huge differences between Breath of the Wild and a true🍬 survival game: you aren't able to craft your weapons and gear.
4 ✨ It Is: You Have to Discover How To Su𓆏rvive
One of the hallmarks of a classic survival game is being dropped in the middle of a landscape with little to no guidance about how to survive here. You have to explore your surroundings and learn about them in order to be able to make it. Breath of the Wild uses this mechanism to a high degree.
You have to explore the world t😼o find out what ingredients are available and experiment with those ingredients to determine what recipes you 🎃can make. Sure, there might be recipes on posters, but that's not the same as having a cookbook from the start.
3 🤪 It'♓s Not: There's No Tech Tree
However, in traditional survival games like Subnautica, you're working up a tech tree. You start out with simple resources you can gather and use them to make tools. Later, you use your tools to make ways to refine or combine resources into new resources. These new resources let you make more comp🐈licated and powerful tools.
There isn't really a tech tree in Breath of the Wild. Over𝄹 time, you will get more powerful weapons and tools, but that's not because you're building your way up to them, it's because the game moves on ൲to more advanced stages.
2 It Is: The World Is Open And Exp💮lorabl🃏e
When you get dropped down in the middle of a landscape in a survival game, you have little to no direction about where to go. The game isn't structured around quests and goals, it's structured around exploration and discovery. Breath of the Wild captures this aspect very well.
The new Hyrule is a huge, open-world and you can explore it as y♛ou choose and as you are able--you might not always have the equipment to get where you want to go.
1 ꦜ ⭕ It's Not: The Game Is Still Quest-Oriented
However, the freedom in Breath of the Wild is illusory to a great degree. The world f🐻eels open and free, but there is a great deal of control placed over you. It's like a zoo where the fences and obstacles are concealed in plain sight. There are natural-looking barriers that you just don't see holding the animals in.
While it's possible to break out of some of these confinements, the game is designed so that most players will simply follow the pre-ordained sequence. And, of course, we have a very clear ultimate goal: defeat Ganon♐. And that's what ult꧒imately makes this a Legend of Zelda game and not a survival game.
