These often hard-to-find chests are one of the best ways to get legendary and exotic gear for a relatively easy payoff. There are 57 in total, with a varied amount in each location, similar to how they were used in the previous Borderlands games.
Some chests require special circumstances to unlock, others are simply found by looking in hidden locations, and others are unlockable through boss battles. Red chests are required for 100% completion and are trackable through the in-game map view, so if you're a serious completionist, they are vital.
What Are Red Chests?
Red chests are loot chests found across the map of Borderlands 3, much like your typical loot boxes, except they contain high-level gear. They are found in five of the main areas of the game - Pandora, Promethea, Athenas, Eden 6, and Nekrotafeyo.
It's worth waiting until you're level 50 before embarking on the hunt for all red chests as you can guarantee the best possible loot. However, it's also worth opening the few that you're given from boss fights to ensure you're not completely overwhelmed with bad gear.
You can also open each chest multiple times by switching maps and returning the chest which is a great way to farm gear, especially when you've reached max level.
They are one of the few collectibles in Borderlands 3 that aren't shown on the in-game map since finding them is part of the challenge.
Every chest has to be unlocked to 100% the game other than two found in The Droughts and Athenas. Some also require side-missions to have been comp♕leted before you can a🍌ccess them.
You can find red chests of all types across the Borderlands 3 map. Each weapon brand has its own unique design which will be readily apparent once you get an idea of each brand's look.
