Set in France in the 1700s, the film is also a commentary on the state of society, and you see this in a few scenes where the jarring juxtaposition between the wealthy and the poor is noticeable. Although Jean's actions are undeniably cruel, his deranged quest is a reflection of the lack of lo🐽ve and care in his life, to the point he had to artificially create it through a perfume bottle.
