In fact, Gundam essentially invented the "real robot" mecha subgenre, which is characterized by mecha that are realistic or within the realm of possibility. While this distinction may have faded slightly over time within the various Gundam series, it was what originally set Mobile Suit Gundam apart from other series and made it the essential mecha anime. Below, we'll take a look at a few of the very best Gundam anime series throughout the years, in no particular order.

Updated January 27, 2025: We've added more Gundam anime series to this list, as well as added extra images for a few entries.

10 Mobil🌳e Suit Gundam 𒀰

Mobile Suit Gundam, often referred to simply as Gundam '79, was the original that s🌸tarted it all. In the space colony of Side 7, a young mechanic named Amuro Ray is suddenly thrust into an intergalactic war when his home is attacked. In an act of desperation, Amuro finds himself battling the invaders, soldiers from the Principality of Zeon, using the RX-78 Gundam.

For the most part, the original Gundam series follows a monster of the week format, where each episode has Amuro fighting som🥀e new Zeon mobile suit or his long-time riv𓄧al Char Aznable. However, the overarching story about the destruction caused by war and the impact war can have on children is poignant, and these themes remain the hallmarks of future Gundam series.

9 Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War In The Pocket 𒈔

War in the Pocket is a short, six-episode OVA series set during the end of the One Year W🐓ar. The story follows Alfred Izuruha, a ten-year-old boy who is fascinated with warfare and mobile suits. However, when the war reaches Side 6 where Alfred lives, he learns of the true nature of war and what it entails.

While not nearly as long as a 🍰typical Gundam series, War in the Pocket manages to tell a toﷺuching story that is very on-theme for the series as a whole; with great mobile suit fights that don't overshadow the anti-war messaging. Although it takes place after the original series, War in the Pocket makes a great entry point to the Universal Century timeline due to its short length and essential Gundam themes.

8 Moౠbile Suit Gu🌌ndam 00

Unlike the original series, which is set in the Universal Century timeline, Gu𝄹ndam 00 is set in the Anno Domini timeline of the Gundam universe, taking place in an alternate version of Earth where fossil fuels have completely run dry, and humanity has begun using solar power for almost everything. However, not everyone is able to take advantage of this power, leading to fighting between various factions both on Earth anღd in space.

The story follows Loran Cehack, who pilots the titular Turn A Gundam, on his quest to unite the humans of Earth and the Moonrac𝓡e despite their aggression towards one another. 2 Mobile Suit Gundam𝐆: The Witch From Mercury

The Witch from Mercury begins as a fairly slice-of-life story about a young girl from Mercury who transfers to the Asticass🌟ia School of Techno🐟logy, an education facility specializing in mobile suits. Suletta, the show's protagonist, struggles to make friends and fit in at the school, but she excels in mobile suit duels, which are used to settle differences between students.

As you would expect from a Gundam series, this peaceful life 🐈doesn't last as tensions between corporations rise through ꦺthe solar system, eventually drawing Suletta into brutal conflict. The Witch from Mercury is also a great introduction to Gundam; at only 25 episodes, it's shorter than most other series on this list.

1 Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th💞 MS Team

Set during the One Year War, The 08th MS Team follows a small group of Earth Federation forces that are tasked with finding a mysterious new Zeon weapon hidden in 🅠the jungles of Southeast Asia. The 08th MS Team also has some of the best animation of any Gundam series, and the Gouf Custom fight still reigns as one of the best mobile suit fight scenes to this day. If you're looking for a shorter series ♑focused around a small cast of characters, 08th MS Team definitely stands the test of time.
